Our Muscles
① When we think of muscles, we might often picture a bodybuilder with big arm and leg muscles. But our muscles do not have to look like that to work well.
② As a matter of fact, every time we write our name, we use the 20 different muscles in our hand. Every time our heart beats, we use our cardiac muscle(心肌). When we eat our food, we use our tongue muscles. We even use muscles when we open and close our eyes. In fact, every time we move, we use some of the muscles in our body.
③ A muscle made of tiny fibers are packed together to make a single muscle. We all have the same number of muscles — about 700 or so. Men and women with big muscles simply have thicker bundles of fibers.
④ There are three different types of muscles in our body. Smooth muscles are the ones that we cannot control. They work quietly to keep our body running. Also, they are the ones that help us to absorb our food. The cardiac muscle makes the heart pump blood in and out. Skeletal muscles are the ones that we can control. These are the muscles that we use to raise our hands, or ride our bicycles.
⑤ Even our face often uses muscles. But if we want to save our energy, try smiling instead of frowning. Remember that it takes 17 muscles in our face to smile, but 43 muscles to frown!

Volunteers
① Volunteers are people who work without being paid. They do the work because they want to. We need volunteers because there are many things that need to be done in society which the Government can't afford to pay for.
② Volunteers are motivated by a desire to help others and to make the world a better place. Statistics suggest that more than one million people do voluntary work in New Zealand. Some volunteers do the kind of work that they are particularly interested in, but perhaps haven't had the chance to do during their working lives. Others make use of their professional skills and experience.
③ Volunteers contribute to society in a number of ways. For example, some give their time to help preserve the natural environment. While there are government-run projects to maintain national parks and forests, the projects would not succeed without volunteers. Some environmental organizations rely solely on voluntary labor.
④ “Meals on Wheels” is a voluntary organization run by the Red Cross. It delivers meals to elderly people who are unable to cook for themselves. Every year volunteer drivers deliver a million meals. This enables elderly people to remain in their own houses.
⑤ Volunteer Service Abroad was started in 1962. It sends volunteers to poor countries. To be a volunteer you should be between the ages of 25 and 77, of good health and have a skill or ability that is requested by the country. Volunteers spend two years helping the local people improve their lives. Two years is a long time, but when they return, many volunteers say, “It was the best two years of my life.”

Secrets for a Happier You
Some people are naturally blessed with a cheerful character. They spread warmth and sunshine wherever they go. They attract people like bees to honey. So what is it that makes these people so different from others?
① The most important secret to happiness is to be grateful for the good things in your life—whatever may be your financial position. Instead of appreciating material wealth, be thankful for the loved ones in your life and enjoy the little pleasures of life that come your way.
② The next most important secret is to develop relationships. Increasing social contacts helps boost brain power. Therefore, work towards improving your relationships and take time off to get in touch with friends. This will lift some burden off your shoulders, especially when you share your thoughts and feelings. Socializing can give you an added boost to your moods.
③ Thirdly, do not hold a grudge (怨恨) against anyone. Instead, learn to be kind, generous, and forgiving towards others, even to the person who hurt you. Be sympathetic and understanding, and try not to criticize others. Focus on the positives of a person instead of the negatives, for none of us is born perfect. It will keep your heart and mind free and peaceful.
④ Besides, involve yourself in some creative process, be it dancing, writing or drawing. This can bring out the hidden talent in you to achieve magical happiness. Or pick up new skills and feel the great sense of satisfaction by carrying out certain tasks which you otherwise would never have felt.
⑤ Finally, follow a daily regular sleep-wake cycle to keep you energetic and happy. Exercise regularly or practice relaxation techniques like deep breathing and yoga (瑜伽). Ensure you get eight to nine hours of sleep every day and have a well-balanced diet.

More Than One Kind of Intelligence
①You may have heard people mention “IQ” when talking about how smart someone is. IQ stands for “Intelligence quotient (智商)”. It can help predict how well someone may do academically.
②IQ is just one measure of our abilities. There are many other kinds of intelligence. For example, spatial (空间的)intelligence is the ability to think in 3D. Musical intelligence is the ability to recognize rhythm and tone. Abilities in sports and arts are other types of intelligence.
③Another important type of intelligence is emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence (EQ for short) is the ability to understand, use, and manage our emotions. Just as a high IQ can predict top test scores, a high EQ can predict success in social and emotional situations. EQ helps us build strong relationships, make good decisions, and deal with difficult situations.
④One way to think about EQ is that it is part of being people-smart. Understanding and getting along with people help us become successful in our lives. In fact, some studies show that EQ is more important than IQ when it comes to doing well in school or being successful at work.
⑤Some people are born with good EQ skills; others need to work on them. Everyone can get better if they know what to do. Being able to notice and label everyday feelings is the most basic EQ skills. Being aware of emotions helps us manage our own emotions. It also helps us understand how others feel.

Changes in Marriage
①There are several factors that influenced women during the Victorian(维多利亚的)age to marry. Many of them were a result of lack of choice. First we need to deal with education to understand why women married. Women were left uneducated in many areas of life. They had no control over their education and were only taught about domestic duties. Starting at a young age, they were taught that a woman should get married and have children. They were born, raised and educated to become wives and nothing else. A woman was not expected to work unless she was in the lower class and had no choice.
②The development from Victorian marriage to modern marriage was a slow process. In the 1960s, women began to exercise their power and freedom more publicly. Women began to marry for happiness. Women began to work more and more outside of the home, and during the war time when their husbands left to war, they were asked to take on more jobs that their husbands had left behind.
③Beginning in the 1840s, a series of laws were passed that began to allow women in marriage to have a bit more control. In 1839 the Infant and Child Custody(监护)Act allowed women to take custody of their children under the age of seven if divorced or separated. In 1857, ordinary divorce was established in England through the Divorce Act. In 1870, the Married Women’s Property Act allowed for women to keep their earnings and even inherit personal properties and money. Slowly but surely, women were gaining control over themselves, their children and their possessions.
④Divorce, unlike during the Victorian period, is a lot more acceptable. Now when a couple gets a divorce, the woman is more likely to get the custody of her children than the man. Divorce is now seen as a way to get out of marriage as a result of any type of unhappiness.
⑤Women these days have a lot more control over their marriages than they used to. A woman is free to marry who she wants for the most part. She can choose to be married as well as have a career. If a woman is unable to have kids, there are many ways that would help her. Even choosing not to have kids is not looked down upon as it used to be.

① The endless debate about "work-life balance" often contains a hopeful footnote about stay at home dads. If American society and business won't make it easier on future female leaders who choose to have children, there is still the ray of hope that increasing numbers of full-time fathers will. But based on today's socioeconomic trends, this hope is, unfortunately, misguided.

② It's true that the number of men who have left work to do their thing as full-time parents has doubled in a decade, but it's still very small: only 0.8% of married couples where the stay-at-home father was out of the labor force for a year. Even that percentage is likely inflated by men thrust into their caretaker role by a downsizing. This is simply not a large enough group to reduce the social stigma(污名) and force other adjustments necessary to supporting men in this decision even if only work more than their family.

③ Even shorter times away from work for working fathers are already difficult. A study found that 85% of new fathers take some time off after the birth of a child-but for all but a few, it's a week or two at most. Meanwhile, the average for women who take leave is more than 10 weeks.

④ Such choices impact who moves up in the organization. While you're away, someone else is doing your work, making your sales, taking care of your customers. That can't help you at work. It can only hurt you. Women, of course, face the same issues of returning after a long absence. But with many more women than men choosing to leave the workforce entirely to raise families, returning from an extended parental leave doesn't raise as many eyebrows as it does for men.

⑤ Women would make more if they didn't break their earning trajectory(轨迹) by leaving the workforce, or if higher-paying professions were more family friendly. In the foreseeable future, stay-at-home fathers may make all the difference for individual families. But their presence won't reduce the numbers of high potential women who are forced to choose between family and career.

Easy Ways to Green up Your Life
① Eating meat produces greenhouse gas emissions(排放). If you can't give up meat completely, you can reduce your consumption or give up beef. Don't eat out-of-season farm products. They are grown in greenhouses. A lot of energy goes into heating the greenhouses. And shipping such out-of-season farm products by air from remote places consumes huge amount of energy, too. Just look for local and in-season foods.
② Spend less time behind the wheel, cycle and walk more, and use public transport more. If you have to drive, the first thing is to choose a car that uses comparatively less fuel. Besides, stick to the speed limit, keep your tires properly filled with air, empty your trunk of heavy items, and accelerate and brake gently.
③ Want to take a vacation trip by plane? Don’t hurry. Think again. Air travel has a big impact on the environment compared with most other forms of travel. You have better choices. Consider having a vacation within driving distance. Of course, taking the train is the best choice.
④ Think about how much "stuff" you own. A big part of emissions are linked to our consumption. To reduce it we need a change in consumption culture. Do we really need all the things we buy? And do we always need the newest one? Getting fewer things and making the ones you own last longer will reduce energy use.
⑤ Your choices about heating and cooling your home are some of the most important things you can do in terms of cutting your greenhouse gas emissions. Keeping the temperature a little lower in the winter and higher in the summer can make a big difference.

Ancient Greek Values
①Ancient Greek civilization has greatly helped the building of today's society. Many countries now still base their laws and ethics(伦理)on the teachings and doings of ancient Greeks. In everyday life, ancient Greeks valued loyalty, glory, intelligence and hospitality(好客).These may seem simple values, but they did effectively shape ancient Greece into a most referenced culture in history.
②During ancient Greece, men were required to go to school and learn. Boys were taught at home until they were 6 years old and then sent off to school. Ancient Greek schools featured a structure that had boys in school from the age of six until fourteen and then an optional additional four years. The boys were trained in arts and in citizen training. Citizen training prepared Greek boys for two aspects of adult life, which were peace and war.
③Glory for young men in ancient Greek was the same as fame to young people today. Stories of war glories and battles were handed down to young men so that they desired to make their names along with the victory of a battle.
④Helping your fellow man was an important aspect of life in ancient Greek. Ancient Greeks were kind and generous. They offered food, shelter and protection to travelers without question. They believed that helping others was their brotherly duty.
⑤Loyalty is perhaps the most important value of ancient Greek civilization. It was stressed in everything the Greeks did. They believed in loyalty to the family, the community and most importantly to the gods. The gods of ancient Greek often sent tests to citizens. Keeping faith through the tests was a sign of loyalty and belief.

Team Work in Sports
① Teams that win in team sports are often those that work well together. Learning to cooperate with others towards a common goal in sports is what builds character, friendship and important life skills for players.
② Working towards a common goal will keep the team firmly together. Entering into a new season in sports, you might only know a few of the players on your team. Some of the players may be people you do not like. But when your team decides to be the winner of the season, personal differences are often set aside for the common good of the team. By the end of the season, players who have fought through the whole season may become good friends, much like brothers.
③ For kids and young adults, team sports offer a way for them to get out and meet with friends. This can help them avoid spending too much time at home watching television and playing video games. Team work teaches people how to help each other and encourage each other. It can also give players a greater respect for one another and can build friendships that last a lifetime.
④ Team work in sports offers a way for people to compete for something together. It is important to know that winning is not everything in sports and healthy competition can be good for people. Working towards a goal can teach people the value of hard work, commitment and devotion. Team sports are a great way to learn these values.
⑤ Team work in sports can help young people develop stronger communication skills. As every member must work for the same goal, they learn how to work with one another successfully.

Garlic(大蒜)
Garlic has a long history of human use of over 7,000 years. It was originally grown in Asia. It finally made its way to Europe and South and North Americas in the 16th century. It rapidly spread to the world because it was easy to grow and could stay alive in poor conditions.
Garlic has also long been used in medicine. Egyptians fed garlic to the slaves to keep up their strength and to defend against diseases. The Romans believed that garlic cured many diseases and helped heal wounds. Greeks gave garlic to athletes during the Olympic Games in order to increase their strength.
More recently, garlic has been mentioned as being used as a treatment for battle wounds in both World Wars. In fact, even today people eat garlic for its supposed benefits. For example, many people eat garlic to help fight colds and coughs. Some even claim that garlic can help prevent high blood pressure and cancer.
A different use for garlic in the past was to keep away bad spirits. In some countries, people believed that if they wore garlic around their necks, bad things would not enter their bodies. And if they hung garlic outside the doors of their homes, bad things would go away.
Garlic is now grown everywhere in the world. China is the largest producer of garlic, followed by India, South Korea, Egypt and Russia. The popularity of garlic has increased over the years. It is now widely used in all types of cooking. Chinese dishes use garlic. Italian dishes include a lot of garlic, too. Garlic is now highly valued for its taste throughout the world.

As every physics student learns, there are four known forces of nature: gravity, electromagnetism, a "strong force" that binds atomic nuclei and a "weak force” that governs certain types of radioactive decay. Last week researchers at the Los Alamos National Laboratory announced that they may have found the best evidence yet for a hypothetical, elusive "fifth force”. If confirmed, their findings could mean that Sir Issac Newton's famous inverse-square law of gravity is in danger of losing the dignified position it has held for three centuries. “It's like saying Mem and apple pie's no good any more”, admits the leader of the gravity project, Geophysicist Mark Ander. “You just don't do that lightly.”
The physicists reached their conclusion as the result of an experiment conducted in Greenland last summer. They lowered a supersensitive meter into a mile-deep hole bored in glacial ice--chosen because its density is more uniform than that of rock—and monitored the gravity as the meter descended, What occurred was startling: the expected increase in gravitational force predicted by Newton was there, but it got stronger, faster than expected. Either something was enhancing the force of gravity or the researchers had come upon a heretofore unknown, far more complex working of gravity itself. Or, just possibly, they had made a mistake.
The fifth force, if that is what it is, has been a source of debate among physicists since its existence was suggested in 1981 by Australian mineshaft experiments. Five years later, Purdue University Physics Professor E. Fischbach measured a weak force he called "hypercharge" and theorized that it caused object of different composition to fall at different rates. Since Fischbach's finding, as many as 45 experiments have sprung up in search of the mystery force, and so far each has served only to confuse rather than clarify the issue.
Jim Thomas, a physicist at the California Institute of Technology, praises the technical precision of Ander's experiment, but cautions that measuring gravity in holes is inexact at best. He points out, for example, that an aberration in the earth's crust might have caused the unusual measurements. What we are talking about is the possible modification of gravity, which is the fourth force,"adds Thomas. Even Ander stresses the strict confirmation is needed before he accepts the results of his Greenland experiment, Says he, "Gee, I've gotta be wrong—Newton certainly can't be wrong!"

Not long after George and Betty were married, they were talking about a movie they had just seen. Betty thought the leading man was extremely attractive. George didn't. "But it wasn't just his physical appearance," Betty said. "He was strong, but kind and considerate. That's what I find attractive in a man. Though you don't always act that way you're really strong and self-confident, too, George,"she continued. "I love you for that.”
George had never thought of himself as strong and self-confident before. He usually sat back and let others make decisions for him, even push him around. Betty's words made him decide that from that moment on, no matter how he felt in situation, he would try to appear strong and self-confident. The next day, George stood his ground in an argument at a supermarket checkout counter. Gradually, with Betty cheering him on, he demonstrated his quiet strength at home, in the community and at work.
"If Betty had said to George, ‘Why can't you be like the hero?' she would have gotten hurt feelings and an argument, not improvement," says Robert H. Lauer, professor of human behavior at U.S. International University in San Diego. Instead, by complimenting George, and telling what she wanted, Betty helped him change.
George and Betty had discovered the secret of successful marriages, says Lauer—the art of helping each other improve and grow. Lauer and his wife, Jeanette, studied 351 couples married at least 15 years and found that one of the characteristics happy marriages most commonly shared was the ability of husband and wife to recognize each other's hidden qualities and nurture them. "Mutual improvement and education are essential to a strong marriage, "says Lauer.

Improve Your Memory

If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows this, and nobody would think of questioning this fact. Yet there are many people who do not seem to know that the memory works in the same way. When someone says that he had a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by exercising it regularly, either consciously or unconsciously. When someone says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough opportunity to become strong. The position is exactly the same as that of two people, one of whom exercises his arms and legs by playing tennis while the other sits in a chair or a motor car all day.
If a friend complains that his arms are weak, we know that it is his own fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame, or that he is just unlucky, and few of us realize that it is just as much his own fault as if it was his arms or legs that were weak. Not all of us can become extremely strong or extremely clever; but all of us can, if we have ordinary bodies and brains, improve our strength and our memory by the same means—practice.
Have you ever noticed that people who cannot read or write usually have better memories than those who can? Why is this? Of course, because those who cannot read or write have to remember things; they can not write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember dates, times and prices, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
So if you want a good memory, learn from the poor and humble; practice remembering.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

There will be a major shift in the age distribution in the American workforce. As the baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1963) begin to hit retirement age, they will be replaced by the so-called ”Generation Y” or ”Millennial Generation,” who number almost 80 million. And the qualified workers of this generation are soon going to be desperately needed, leaving businesses no choice but to figure out how to attract and keep them.
People often say that members of the ”Millennial Generation” can’t take care of themselves and are going to bring the world down with them. Some people might think Millennials are spoiled internet addicts (上瘾者) who feel a strong sense of entitlement and aren’t willing to work hard for the great rewards they expect.
In reality Millennials are the first generation of “digital natives,“ that is, they have never known a world without digital technology. As a result Millennials experience the world in a completely different way than previous generations. They experience the world through technology, as older generations experience the world through their organic senses. This intimacy(亲密接触) with the digital world is one of the Millennials’ greatest strengths. It also presents the greatest challenge to those companies that need highly qualified applicants. Managers need to determine ways to use their strengths and work with their weaknesses with business goals in mind.
The key to attracting and managing Millennials is to create an experience of the company that matches their technological experience of the world. It’s about finding a balance between youthful enthusiasm, cooperative spirit, and the realities of the business world.
The business world is experiencing a continued breakdown of the authoritarian management style that in some ways still remains as a legacy(遗留做法)from the early 20th century. Managers are going to have to be patient and flexible to a large extent because one thing is for sure, nothing makes Millennials unhappier than doing tasks with traditional methods that can be done better and more efficiently with the right technology or more sophisticated methods.
They need to be given the opportunity to use the technologies they are familiar with to cooperate with each other and do business. The best candidates are going to be attracted to companies that are willing to give employees what they need and want.

The long summer holidays are finally over and some parents are pleased. "We worry more about their safety in the holidays, explains one mother from North London. If teenagers are not wandering around on public transport in a big and potentially dangerous city, they are chatting to strangers in an internet chat room! Well, that's an extreme picture of the UK today, but many parents are worried about how much freedom they can give their children during the holidays and at weekends..
Weekends are not the only time to worry! Newspapers are full of stories about too many school kids going to school by car because their parents do not want them to travel alone on a bus or train. This summer there were more frightening stories of many teenagers disappearing with questionable friends that they met on the net. All the Media stories help increase parents fears, but is the UK really so dangerous?
Many young people feel that life for their parents was easier. In the 1960s young people played in the streets more and traveled around town without their parents. "At least our parents can keep tabs on us," says 16-year-old Julia. "So many people have mobile phones now and their parents ring to find out where they are. I use my mobile to get Dad to come to the station when I arrive late. " Mobiles are not just expensive toys; they help keep young people safe. Most significantly, they make parents feel better. Only one problem is, though, that some young people have been attacked by thieves who want to steal their mobile phones.
Young people like going out with friends, but they now need to learn how to get home safely. Five million young people in the UK between the ages of 9 to 16 use chat rooms to make friends, but they, too, need to be careful and never give their personal details to a stranger, Young people today have more opportunities to meet new people and go out at night more than their parents ever did. Now schools, television programs and newspapers must help teenagers to enjoy their freedom and to be responsible for their own safety.

For Americans, time is a "resource" that, like water or coal, can be used well or poorly. "Time is money," they say. "You only get so much time in this life; you’d better use it wisely." The future will not be better than the past or the present unless people use their time for constructive, future-oriented activities. Thus, Americans admire a "well-organized" person, one who has a written list of things to do and a schedule for doing them. The ideal person is punctual and treasures other people’s time.
The American attitude towards time is not necessarily shared by others, especially non-Europeans. They are more likely to consider time as something that is simply there around them, not something they can "use". One of the more difficult things many foreign businessmen and students must adjust to in the States is the notion that time must be saved whenever possible and used wisely every day.
In their efforts to use their time wisely, Americans are sometimes seen by foreign visitors as automatons, unhuman creatures who are so tied to their clocks and their schedules that they cannot participate in or enjoy the human interactions that are the truly important things in life. "They are like little machines running around," one foreign visitor said.
The emphasis Americans place on efficiency is closely related to their concepts of the future, change and time. To do something efficiently is to do it in the way that is quickest and requires the smallest investment of resources. American businesses sometimes hire "efficiency experts" to review their operations and suggest ways in which they could accomplish more than they are currently accomplishing with the resources they are investing. Popular periodicals carry suggestions for more efficient ways to clean house, raise children, tend the yard, and so on.
In this context the "fast-food industry" can be seen as a clear example of an American cultural product. McDonald’s, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Pizza Hut, and other fast-food establishments prosper in a country where many people want to minimize the amount of time they spend preparing and eating meals. The millions of Americans who take their meals at fast-food restaurants cannot have much interest in lingering over their food while conversing with friends, as millions of Europeans do. As McDonald’s restaurants have spread around the world, they have been viewed as symbols of American society and culture, bringing not just hamburgers but an emphasis on speed, efficiency, and shiny cleanliness. The typical American food, some observers argue, is fast food.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

Americans are a very energetic and mobile people, always on the run, rushing from one appointment to another, from a PTA (Parent-Teacher Association) meeting to a social planning committee. They have very little time to spend preparing elaborate (精致的,复杂的) everyday meals to be eaten at leisure. In many homes it is rare for the whole family to sit down at supper together. Clubs and committees force them to grab a quick meal rather than a sit-down supper.
When they do have the chance to eat at home, often the working housewife prefers to prepare meals that can be quickly heated and consumed. It is no wonder, therefore, that America has become a shelter for fast food consumption.
This great transformation occurred after World War II when many women began to work full time and spend less time at home with their families. Women, however, wanted to function well in the capacity of homemaker, as well as that of career woman but time became a precious commodity (商品) which had to be carefully used.

Therefore, it was necessary to make her life easier at home in the preparation of the family dinner. Simultaneously with women entering the job market there was also a shifting of the focus of home entertainment from the radio to the television. Television became the latest fashion in the 1950s and no one wanted to miss his or her favorite programs. And then, the place for supper shifted from the dining room to the living room.
As the customs changed, so did the culture. The immediate solution for this was the invention of the TV dinner. These were frozen meals which were divided into portions of meat and vegetables. They could easily be put into an oven (锅) and prepared within minutes. The tin trays (托盘) in which they were served were conveniently carried into the living room and dinner was consumed in front of a TV set. Cleaning up afterwards was no problem. The tin trays were easily thrown into the garbage.
From fast dinners at home the next step was quick eating while on the road. Love for TV was combined with the fascination for the automobile. It is not odd that with the development of the superhighways America saw the beginning of fast food chains. McDonald's paved the way with its variety of burgers and cold drinks soon to be followed by all kinds of other foods. Today dozens of fast-food chain stores can be found along highways, in modern shopping malls and scattered throughout neighborhoods in America. Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Roy Roger's, Burger King and Wendy's are just a few of the fast-food chains which are now part of American culture. They offer chicken, donuts, tacos and pizza, all quickly produced in great quantities for the masses. These establishments have given shape to the modern lifestyles and diet of the American people.

Many of today's most trusted sales techniques were invented over a century ago by a young merchant named Eaton in Toronto. When he was young, Eaton worked briefly with his brothers in small-town stores. In 1869, he set up his own shop in downtown Toronto. He had many competitors, but he was also ambitious and had a plan for success. He offered a unique style of trade, but as was expected, all the other shopkeepers laughed at him, believing he would eventually fail. However, Eaton was not a man to be easily defeated; he came up with a brand new notion of business--"Goods satisfactory, or money refunded. He sold all his goods at fixed prices and only for cash.

With a sharp sense of what the public wanted, he went out of the way to meet their needs. His business grew rapidly. He set up new branches and started mail order service that allowed people to buy from a list of his goods.
Eaton’s List-advertisements of his day--was the first of its kind. It was distributed and read all over the country. It was the only way to access good-quality goods at reasonable prices for people living far away from big cities. It became part of their life. They even called it The Wishing Book. The secret of the list's success was that Eaton gained the respect of his customers; they trusted him for good prices and quality goods. Probably because he remembered his miserable early days in Ireland, Eaton thought much of the welfare of his employees: better working conditions, shorter weekday hours than his competitors and Saturday afternoons off in the summer. In all this, he was a leader.

A centuries-old tradition, illustrated in a modern children's book, links the sweetness of honey with the joy of learning to read.

"The grandpa held a jar of honey so that all the family could see. He then dipped a spoon into it and put some honey on the cover of a small book.

The little girl had just turned five.

'Stand up, little one,’ he asked the girl softly. 'I did this for your mother, your uncles, your older brother, and now you!'

Then, he handed the book to her. 'Taste!'

She touched the honey with her finger and put it into her mouth.

'What's that taste?' the grandma asked.

     The little girl answered, 'Sweet!'

Then all of the family said in a single voice, 'Yes, and so is knowledge, but knowledge is from the bee that made that sweet honey, you have to go after it through the pages of a book!’

The little girl knew that the promise to read was at last hers. Soon she was going to learn to read."

This is the beginning of a profoundly moving children's book entitled Thank You, Mr. Falker. In this book, Patricia Polacco writes of her own passion to read, inspired by the honey on the book. It wasn't until fifth grade that she met her beloved teacher who provided the help that she needed to finally unlock the magic of the written word.

Reading this book, we are in fact acquainted with some enduring traditions of child education that stress the importance of verbal capacity at a very early age.

The child learning to read is admitted into a collective memory by way of books. And with the printed words that are active with meaning, the child becomes acquainted with a common past which he or she renews, to a greater or lesser degree, in every reading. Much as the author of the book Thank You, Mr. Falker puts it, "Almost as if it were magic, or as if light poured into her brain, the words and sentences started to take shape on the page as they never had before... And she understood the whole thing... Then she went into the living room and found the book on a shelf, the very book that her grandpa had shown her so many years ago. She spooned honey on the cover and tasted the sweetness... Then she held the book, honey and all, close to her chest. She could feel tears roll down her cheeks, but they weren't tears of sadness—she was happy, so very happy."

从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

The question of whether dogs have a sense of humour is often fiercely argued. My own opinion is that some have and some haven’t. Dachshunds have, but not St Bernards or Great Danes. Apparently a dog has to be small to be fond of joke. You never find a Great Dane trying to be a comedian.
But it is fatal to let any dog know that he is funny, for he immediately loses his head and starts overdoing it. As an example of this I would point to Rudolph, a dachshund I once owned, whose slogan was ”Anything for a Laugh”. Dachshunds are always the worst offenders in this respect because of their peculiar shape. It is only natural that when a dog finds that his mere appearance makes the viewing public laugh, he should imagine nature intended him to be a comedian.
I had a cottage at the time outside an English village, not far from a farm where they kept ducks, and one day the farmer called on me to say his ducks were disappearing and suspicion had fallen on my Rudolph. Why? I asked, and he said because mine was the only dog in the neighbourhood except his own Towser and Towser had been so carefully trained that he would not touch a duck even if you brought it to him with orange sauce over it.
I was very annoyed. I said he only had to gaze into Rudolph’s truthful brown eyes to see how baseless were his suspicions. Had he not, I asked, heard of foxes? How much more likely that a fox was the Bad Guy in the story. He was beginning to look doubtful and seemed about to make an apology, when Rudolph, who had been listening with interest and at a certain point had left the room, came trotting(小跑) in with a duck in his mouth.
Yes, dachshunds overplay their sense of humour, and I suppose other dogs have their faults, but they seem unimportant compared with their virtues.
