Not long after George and Betty were married, they were talking about a movie they had just seen. Betty thought the leading man was extremely attractive. George didn't. "But it wasn't just his physical appearance," Betty said. "He was strong, but kind and considerate. That's what I find attractive in a man. Though you don't always act that way you're really strong and self-confident, too, George,"she continued. "I love you for that.”
George had never thought of himself as strong and self-confident before. He usually sat back and let others make decisions for him, even push him around. Betty's words made him decide that from that moment on, no matter how he felt in situation, he would try to appear strong and self-confident. The next day, George stood his ground in an argument at a supermarket checkout counter. Gradually, with Betty cheering him on, he demonstrated his quiet strength at home, in the community and at work.
"If Betty had said to George, ‘Why can't you be like the hero?' she would have gotten hurt feelings and an argument, not improvement," says Robert H. Lauer, professor of human behavior at U.S. International University in San Diego. Instead, by complimenting George, and telling what she wanted, Betty helped him change.
George and Betty had discovered the secret of successful marriages, says Lauer—the art of helping each other improve and grow. Lauer and his wife, Jeanette, studied 351 couples married at least 15 years and found that one of the characteristics happy marriages most commonly shared was the ability of husband and wife to recognize each other's hidden qualities and nurture them. "Mutual improvement and education are essential to a strong marriage, "says Lauer.
