Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

More than 20 Chinese and American experts discovered that young people of both countries are facing the same problems of economic and social pressures and lack of confidence.
An American expert of the Campus Outreach Opportunity League of Minnesota University said that under economic pressure American young people have to work hard and most students have to take part-time work in order to make some money for themselves. "Young people today," he said, "are viewed as indifferent, self-centred, and concerned only with making -money and getting ahead." In these circumstances, he said, young people lack confidence, which was not the case in the 1960s when young Americans thought themselves capable of doing anything.
In spite of the different conditions in China, an official of the higher education section of the All-China Youth Federation said Chinese young people are also facing economic pressure and are worried about inflation and corruption. Trading has appeared in many Chinese universities as students with something to sell try to make money on campus. Moreover, college students have begun to doubt whether what they are learning in class will help them find work, as many businesses totally ignore students of pure theory. So people describe students as "a lost generation tired of study", regardless of the causes in society that are shaking their confidence.
In order to resolve these problems, the Chinese and American experts agreed that youth organizations should call on the society to create favourable conditions for the healthy growth of young people, as well as to encourage them to meet the urgent needs of society and to challenge the assumption that young people are indifferent and uncaring.
The American expert said that since last year he has sent letters of "challenge to youth" to many young people, urging them to commit themselves to addressing such needs as feeding the hungry, housing the homeless, educating the illiterate, consoling the lonely and sick, serving the elderly, and preserving the environment. The letter says: "Through services, we touch the lives of others and enrich our own."

How to Protect the Art of Public Speaking
If you want to become the type of speaker you've always wanted to be, read the following suggestions.
①You can't go from a nervous speaker to a star speaker overnight. You shouldn't expect to. Give yourself time to get used to a large audience. Start with smaller groups and get as much feedback as you can. Keep on practicing and developing your skills.
②Be familiar with your speech materials. That doesn't mean memorizing your speech, which can lack enthusiasm and naturalness. Know your key talking points, supporting details and ways to move from one point to the next.
③Positive energy can be passed. If you're excited and enthusiastic, your audience will be, too. You'll be surprised at the positive cycle that creates: An enthusiastic audience can add even more energy to you. Use hand gestures. When appropriate, smile, smile, smile.
④Find friendly, interested faces in the audience and speak to them. Look into their eyes. It helps prevent you from staring off into the distance or reading from notes. It also helps make you feel like you are talking in a conversation rather than speaking to a group.
⑤When you look great, you feel great. That makes you confident. Looking great doesn't mean wearing new clothes. It means wearing clothes and shoes you feel comfortable and appropriate to the setting. You can't go wrong with business suit. Simple is fine, but you should look clean from head to toe.

Research Is a State of Mind
For many years, there has been much misunderstanding as to just what research is. The popular belief seems to be that there is something mysterious (神秘的) about it and every research requires expensive scientific equipment. Actually, this is not so. Research isn't a physical thing at all; it's a state of mind. It is a simple, organized way of trying to accomplish something you wish to do.
You start by selecting the problem you would like to solve, and then you list at least ten reasons why it has not been solved. But in selecting the problem, you need to be sure that it is worth the effort. Remember, it takes just as much effort to solve a useless problem as a useful one.
After carefully selecting the problem and the ten things between you and the solution, you then use the same procedure as in solving a crossword puzzle(填字游戏). You start with the less serious difficulties, and eventually you arrive at the one or two major ones. In the solution of the remaining difficulties, you may need some simple equipment, but what you need most is patience. Few people realize how hard it is to do anything new.
Maybe one of the reasons people are so easily discouraged is because of their education. During all our years at school, we were examined two or three times a year. If we failed once, we were out. However, all research work is 99.9% failure and, if we succeed once, we are in. If we are going to make progress, we must learn to fail intelligently so that we won't become discouraged at the 99.9% failure.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

The threat of global outbreak (疾病大爆发)of bird flu makes it urgent for the international community to cooperate effectively. Wealthy countries will have to provide hundreds of millions of dollars for the testing and production of medicines necessary for treating patients suffering from bird flu. Developing countries, particularly in Southeast Asia, where the bird flu virus(病毒) has spread since 1997, must work out special programs so that farmers will not hide signs of possible outbreaks. In addition, the way such farm birds as chickens and ducks are traditionally raised and marketed in the developing world should be changed; there should be more distance between the birds and their keepers. Countries should deal with the disease with joint effort. If one country is inadequately prepared, it will be a threat to every other country.
The potential effects of a national outbreak of bird flu are enormous. Firstly, an outbreak may kill large numbers of people. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that an outbreak similar to the mild Hong Kong flu of 1968 could kill as many as 7.4 million people. If it were as dangerous as the 1918 Spanish flu, which killed 50 million, the number would be much higher. Secondly, such an outbreak may cause great financial damage. The latest outbreak of bird flu, which began in December 2003, has cost Southeast Asia more than $10 billion and depressed its GDP by 1.5 percent. If a new outbreak of bird flu were to last for a whole year, $800 billion would be lost.
Despite the 124 human cases and 63 deaths from bird flu since December 2003, the virus remains mainly a disease of animals. However, the more animals that die of the disease, the more chances it has of spreading to people. Large numbers of dead or dying birds mean that more people will be exposed to the virus, which could in theory combine with a human flu virus and change into a virus with new characteristics. If the international community works together efficiently, man can surely prevent such a virus and possibly save millions of lives.

Surviving Illness Away From Home
Being ill is a horrible thing at the best of times, but what is even worse is when you are ill away from home. If you're living away from home or abroad, it's important to get better at your own pace in order to ensure you can enjoy the rest of your time away.
❶ Pampering (娇惯) yourself is always a good start. If you feel so ill and tired that you can't even get out of bed, then don't! Make a trip to the kitchen and stock up on fluids and try to make yourself some hot food. The key to getting better is to drink lots of fluids. Water and hot drinks such as green tea and soup are usually the best things.
❷ Try to distract yourself from feeling horrible. If you have a TV, watch one of your favorite films or TV series. If you don't have a TV, maybe put the radio on. If you have a headache and all the noise is too much to handle, try reading the book you've always wanted to read but never had the time to. Being ill doesn't have to be the worst day in the world!
❸ Tell your friends and family that you are ill. Sometimes there is nothing better than hearing words of comfort from loved ones who feel sorry for you and want to cheer you up and make you happy. There is nothing wrong with a little attention from others when you're ill. Who knows, they might even be willing to travel and visit you with lots of “Get Well” presents like your favorite food, magazine or flowers.
❹ When you do arrive at a new place where you will be staying for a few months, make sure you know exactly where the nearest drugstore is. If you are in a foreign country, it might be best to translate a few useful phrases before you start asking for a cure.

Have a Safe Trip
① People visit other countries for many reasons. Some travel on business; others travel to visit interesting places that are only found in other countries, such as the Taj Mahal (泰姬陵)in India, or the temples of Thailand.
② Wherever you go, and for whatever reason, it is important to be safe. A tourist can attract a lot of attention from local people. While the majority of people you will meet when traveling are sure to be friendly and welcoming, there are dangers—theft being the most common. Just as in your home country, do not expect everyone you meet to be friendly and helpful.
③ As you prepare for your trip, make sure you have the right paperwork. You don't want to get to your destination only to find you have the wrong visa, or worse, that your passport is about to expire (期满、失效). Also, make sure you travel with proper medical insurance, so that if you are sick or injured during your travels, you will be able to get treatment. If you want to drive while you are abroad, make sure you have an international driver's license.
④ Buy a guidebook and read about the local customs of the country you are going to. Do as the Romans do, and you will save yourself a lot of trouble. Besides, learning in advance can help you understand the local culture better when you are there. Also, try to learn a few basic words and phrases—don't assume that the local people will speak your language.
⑤ When you get to your destination, use official transport. Always go to bus and taxi stands; don't accept rides from strangers who offer you a lift. If there is no meter (表) in the taxi, agree on a price before you get in. If you prefer to stay in cheap hotels while traveling, make sure you can lock the door of your room from the inside. If you are traveling with valuables such as jewelry, or a lot of cash, you should ask about a safe(保险箱) for storing them in.

Why English?
①The English language is used by more people in the world than any other language today. This may seem surprising at first. After all, the population of English native speakers (mainly from United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand) is one of the smallest in the world. The total only comes to about 400 million, which is less than one-tenth of the population of the world. If we count all the English-speakers in India, Singapore and some other countries, that adds another 700 million to the total. Add all those people who speak English elsewhere and the total English-speaking population of the world comes to an impressive one and a half billion.

②Why is this? There is one important historical reason: the influence of the British Empire-the Empire that stretched across the globe. Although the Empire no longer exists, the English language is firmly rooted in its former colonies (殖民地)- in African, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Far East, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean and North America.

③Other important reasons for the spread of English language are economic. English is the language of international business and commerce. Also, most scientific and technological developments have been made by English-speaking societies. To keep up with such developments, to talk about them in international conferences, or write and read about them in scientific journals and books, scientists, scholars and students must be able to understand English.

④There is also a rather less obvious reason. English is the language of a popular culture. All over the globe, millions of young people listen to pop music and watch pop videos. The stars who perform in English are by far the most famous. Hundreds of American and British singers can be heard all over the world. English has become an international language.

⑤English is well suited to this role. Unlike many other languages, it has a built-in flexibility(灵活性)that allows constant adaptation(改编)and assimilation(同化). In English, vocabulary from other languages is often used, new words and combinations of words can be coined(杜撰) easily, nouns can be turned into verbs and vice versa. Thus, what is correct in English is often, simply, what is accepted as appropriate and understandable by those who speak it, whether they are native or non-native speakers.

Hawaii, the Aloha State
① Hawaii is sometimes called “the Aloha State.” Aloha is a word in the Hawaiian language meaning love and peace. It is often used as a way to say “hello” or “goodbye.” Hawaii is like the word aloha, because it is a state that has two viewpoints: it remembers its history and looks toward the future.
② Hawaii is a U.S. state made up of a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean. It is made up of eight large islands and over 100 other smaller islands. It is the only state that is not in North America. The islands were formed by volcanoes that erupted (爆发) and rose above the ocean. There are still active volcanoes in Hawaii.
③ Because of its location, Hawaii has a tropical climate. It is warm, but usually not hot, all year long. Rarely does the temperature drop below 60 degrees Fahrenheit (华氏温度), although it may occasionally snow at the top of some of the mountains.
④ Once called the Sandwich Islands by Europeans, Hawaii is thought to have been settled by ancient sailors from other islands in the Pacific. The British explorer Captain Cook was thought to be the first European to find the islands in 1778. Because of its location, Hawaii became a frequent stop for European traders and ships. Hawaii was an independent country before it became part of the United States in 1893. It was governed by either a king or a queen. It is one of the only four U.S. states to have been a country before statehood. It was admitted into the Union in 1959 as the 50th state.

⑤ Today Hawaii is important as a vacation destination. Each year over 6 million people visit Hawaii to enjoy the beaches, the beautiful ocean, and the historical Hawaiian culture. Come and visit Hawaii. You are sure to love it!

The Woman behind the Brooklyn Bridge
①John Roebling planned to build the Brooklyn Bridge before 1867. But he never really got started. In 1869, he died of an accident. The job fell to his son Washington, a master of construction. In 1872, Washington was injured in building the bridge. He could not walk any longer. He could only see the building of the bridge from his window. But his mind was still fresh. How could he get his ideas down to the workers?
②That's where Emily came in. Emily and Washington married in 1865. At that time John was planning the bridge. He sent his son around the world to study bridges. Emily went along with her husband and learnt much about bridge building. When John died and Washington became the boss, she taught herself more about bridge building. She wanted to help her husband with his new job.
③Emily regularly came to the building site. She gave Washington's instructions to the workers. And then she took questions back to him. However, as time went on, her role started to change. Soon, workers saw her as the new boss. As she had more and more knowledge, she became the chief engineer. She met with officials, discussed with other engineers, and instructed the workers.
④Emily also helped to solve problems outside the building site. Some people once questioned her husband's ability to head the bridge building. And the American Society of Civil Engineers would think about replacing him. Emily went to meet the group. She gave a speech in defense of her husband. The group finally decided to keep him on the job.
⑤It took up 14 years to build the bridge. For 11 of those years, Emily was the one in charge. The bridge finally opened on May 24, 1883. She was one of the first people to cross the bridge. Emily never planned on becoming an engineer, but she turned out to be a great one.

My Family Values

①  I was happy to grow up in a Mexican city with my parents and my younger brother. My mother was an opera singer, and my father was the owner of an oil company. We lived near the ocean. My brother and I would be outside all the time with the neighbors' kids, running free, playing football on the streets and at the beach. What better place could there be for a child?
②  My mother was devoted to helping people who had great voices but didn't have the money to study music. My parents offered dozens of music scholarships. My mother opened a school in town, introducing opera to children. With my father's help, she invited teachers from Mexico City. They would train anybody who had a good voice, and several of her students are now working as professional singers.

③  I have always been inspired by my parents to help people. I am concerned about all women's issues on justice, education and health. Among people suffering injustice, women are always in the worst situation. And the problem is growing. There is still so much domestic violence(家庭暴力)and a general lack of laws to protect women. We have to make sure women are respected and valued.

④  My grandmother was my greatest inspiration. She was a great woman who loved knowledge and was a keen reader. She was also a scientist and a chemist and she was ahead of her time, but for women like her there were no chances. She learned about traditional Indian medicine and studied with Indians in different parts of Mexico. She used to make her own beauty creams. She could make hair grow on bald(秃顶)men!

⑤  I love being a wife and homemaker. But being a mother is very tiring, and sometimes I make myself tired. I can understand how hard it is for women who have to do everything themselves all the time.

Plagiarism(剽窃)
①You just found some good stuff on the Web for your science report. You copy a paragraph and paste it into your report. Then you continue your research. But you just made a big mistake. You committed plagiarism. Plagiarism is when you use someone else' s words or ideas and pretend that they are yours. It' s not allowed in school, college, or beyond.
②The word" plagiarism" comes from Latin. It means stealing a person' s ideas. But it' s not always easy to tell what is plagiarism and what is not. Sometimes, it's accidental. You really intended to do your own work, yet ended up with some sentences that sound just like something you've read.
③Though plagiarism can be accidental, it's sometimes done on purpose. That' s just being lazy. By copying whole paragraphs from different places, you don't have to spend the time thinking about the subject, gathering your own thoughts about it, and then putting them into original words. Cut, paste, and you're done.
④Most schools are pretty strict about plagiarism. If you're caught, your graduation will be delayed or worse. At the very least, you're probably going to fail the assignment. When you're older and in college, some schools will kick out students who plagiarize. When you're kicked out of one college, it can be hard to get into another.
⑤To be on the safe side, always make it clear where the information comes from. You need to write references. That's a list of the sources you used for a project or report. To do that, you'll need to know the author, the title, and the date it was published. If you write something really great, maybe some day someone will quote you in a report.

Critical reading
Critical reading applies to non-fiction writing in which the author puts forth a position or seek to make a statement. Critical reading is active reading. It involves more than just understanding what an author is saying. Critical reading involves questioning and evaluating what the author is saying, and forming your own opinions about what the author is saying. Here are the things you should do to be a critical reader.

①You may be reading something that was written by an author from a different cultural context than yours. Or, you may be reading something written some time ago in a different context than yours. In either case, you must recognize and take into account any differences between your values and attitudes and those represented by the author.

②Don't accept what is written at face value. Before accepting what is written, be certain that the author provides sufficient support for any assertions made. Look for facts, examples, and statistics that provide support. Also, look to see if the author has integrated the work of authorities.

③ Look to see that what is written is consistent with what others have written about the subject. If there are inconsistencies, carefully evaluate the support the author provides for the inconsistencies.

④ Assumptions are whatever the author must believe is true in order to make assertions. In many cases, the author's assumptions are not directly stated. This means you must read carefully in order to identify any assumptions. Once you identify an assumption, you must decide whether or not the assumption is valid.

⑤ In doing this, be certain that the sources are credible. For example, Einstein is a credible source if the author is writing about landmark achievements in physics. Also be certain that the sources are relevant. Einstein is not a relevant source when the subject is poetry. Finally, if the author is writing about a subject in its current state, be sure that the sources are current. For example, studies done by Einstein in the early 20th century may not be appropriate if the writer is discussing the current state of knowledge in physics.

By being a critical reader, you will become better informed and may change your views as appropriate.

Dormitory Life

①Living in a dormitory at college can be a great experience. However, if you take no steps to make this experience positive, dormitory life can become a misery. When you choose to live in a college dormitory, you will have a better chance to live a colorful and meaningful life. Meanwhile, you will have to give up many things as well.

② When you live in a dormitory, you can meet many people with different interests. And you can enjoy the various services there. Both are very important to make you successful at college. But you may have to give up much of your personal space. You will share a room with someone else. This means you need to make peace with the things and people around you.

③ You will have to learn some important life skills. For example, you will learn how to get along with people. You will also learn to ignore things that you can't change. But in the future, you will find these skills very helpful when you are working in the real world.

④ When you live in a dormitory, you can enjoy a wide range of campus services, which are not available to those who live off campus. If you have any school related problems, you have no difficulty finding someone to help, because the school hires people to help the students living there.

⑤ Besides, living on campus means you don't have to travel to and from school in rush hours. And you are more involved in campus life. For example, you can have a better chance to take part in the club activities and make your own contributions. If you want to live a rich campus life, living in a dormitory is your best choice.

Little Steps, Big Reward
① More than 145 million Americans take walking as part of their exercise, according to a recent report. That's 15 million more people walking than last year. Many places in America have reported an increase in walking. But most of the walkers are found in big cities like New York.
② Despite the increase in walking, only about 30% of Americans say they have at least 3 hours to take exercise a week. Our society has been conditioned to be inactive. People rely on modern conveniences and become lazy. The inactive lifestyle has a negative aspect. We are more likely to be in poor health like overweight, which will threaten our life span. That's where walking comes in.
③ Walking is the best way to improve our health. Just 30 minutes of regular quick walking can help lose weight. At the same time, it can help lower the risk of heart disease and some cancers, and improve our blood pressure. If 30 minutes is too much, we may divide it into three 10-minute parts during the day. Most of us can find 10 minutes if we really try.
④ Walking requires only a pair of shoes and suits any schedules. Keep a pair of sport shoes at work. If you have a few minutes of free time, make use of them to take a quick walk. Even if you go to a health club several times a week, you can still look for ways to be active while at work. It may be walking downstairs for a direct talk rather than sending an email.
⑤ Small efforts can make a big difference. But the hardest part for us is getting started. It's usually like this. When people get to a comfort level of walking for 10 minutes, they might think about trying 11 minutes. That first step is really worthy.

① Most musicians agree that the best violins (小提琴) were made in Cremona, Italy, about 200 years ago. They even sound better than violins made today. Violin makers and scientists try to make instruments (乐器) like the Italian violins, however, they are not the same. Why are these old Italian violins so special? No one really knows. But many people think they have an answer.

② Some people think it is the age of the violins. But there is a problem here. Not all old violins sound wonderful. Only the old violins from Cremona are special. So age cannot be the answer.

③ Other people think the secret to those violins is the wood. It must be from certain kinds of trees. It must not be too young or too old. Perhaps the violin makers of Cremona knew something special about wood for violins.

④ But the kind of wood may not be so important. It may be more important to cut the wood in a special way. Wood for a violin must be cut into the right size and shape. The smallest difference will change the sound of the violin. Musicians sometimes think that this is the secret of the Italians.

⑤ Size and shape may not be the answer either. Scientists make new violins that are exactly the same size and shape. But the new ones still do not sound as good as the old ones. Some scientists think the secret may be the varnish (清漆). It makes the wood look shiny, but it also helps the sound of the instrument. Since no one knows what the Italian violin makers used in their varnish, no one can make the same varnish today. There may never be other violins like the violins of Cremona. And there are not many of the old violins left. So these old violins from Cremona become more and more precious.

A Fighting Lady
① Deborah Sampson was born in 1760. There were many children in her family and they were poor. When Deborah was just a young girl, her father left and went off to sea. Being in poor health, her mother could not care for her children. So she sent them to live with different relatives, hoping these people would take care of her children.
②Young Deborah, less than seven years old, had to work for a farmer. On the farm, she learned to ride and hunt. She did housework as well. Life was difficult, but Deborah worked hard and grew strong. The farmer had ten sons, and Deborah helped to take care of them. In the evening, she had the boys talk about their lessons with her. By this she learned what they learned. She also borrowed their school books to read every night. When she was 18, Deborah became a teacher.
③Soon after she started her new career, the American Revolution began. She wanted to fight for her country, but women could not be soldiers at that time. Deborah had a plan. She was tall for a woman of that time. She made herself a man’ s suit and secretly practiced walking and talking like a man. Finally, she joined the army using the name Robert.
④"Robert"was a brave soldier. He fought with courage in every battle, and other soldiers respected him. They never suspected that their fellow soldier was a woman. Once he caught a fever and had to go to the hospital. There a doctor found out that Robert was actually a woman. Deborah then had to leave the army, but she was not punished. 从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。
I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling(反叛).I wish it were so. At this age they ought to be growing away from their parents. They should be learning to stand on their own feet. In fact, the teenagers are all taking the same way, they disagree with their parents. Instead of speaking out their own ideas loudly, most of them are finding support from one another for reassurance.
They claim they want to dress as they please. But they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music. But they all end up listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in such a way is that the crowd are doing it. They have come out of their cocoon(庇护物), and then got into a larger one.
It has become more and more difficult for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave to go his or her own way. Today every teenager can learn from the ever-present advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today's parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children. All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path.
But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records. You may have some thoughts that you do not care to share with their classmates at once. Well, go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come--with the people who respect you for who you are. That is the only kind of popularity that really counts.

Why does the Foundation concentrate its support on basic rather than applied research? Basic research is the very heart of science, and its cumulative product is the capital of scientific progress, a capital that must be constantly increased as the demands upon it rise. The goal of basic research is understanding, for its own sake. Understanding of the structure of the atom or the nerve cell, the explosion of a spiral nebula(星云)or the distribution of cosmic dust, the causes of earthquakes and droughts, or of man as a behaving creature and of the social forces that are created whenever two or more human beings come into contact with one another-the scope is shocking, but the commitment to truth is the same. If the commitment were to a particular result, conflicting evidence might be overlooked or with the best will in the world, simply not appreciated. Moreover, the practical applications of basic research frequently cannot be anticipated. When Roentgen, the physicist, discovered X-rays, he had no idea of their usefulness to medicine.
Applied research, undertaken to solve specific practical problems, has an immediate attractiveness because the results can be seen and enjoyed. For practical reasons, the sums spent on applied research in any country always far exceed those for basic research, and the proportions are more unequal in the less developed countries. Leaving aside the funds devoted to research by industry-which is naturally far more concerned with applied aspects because these increase profits quickly--the funds the U.S. Government allots to basic research currently amount to about 7 percent of its overall research and development funds. Unless adequate safeguards are provided, applied research invariably tends to drive out basic. Then as Dr. Waterman has pointed out, "Developments will inevitably be undertaken prematurely career incentives will gravitate strongly toward applied science, and the opportunities for making major scientific emphasis upon pure science tend to degrade the quality of the nation’s technology in the long run, rather than to improve it.”

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

Since the beginning of the Internet era, it has been widely accepted that when you join an online company, whatever data you put into it belongs to you.
That means you can sign up for one kind of email, import your contacts into that system, and if you later decide to switch to some other email service, you can export all your contacts from the first service into the new one. You can use Microsoft’s Hotmail, then move to Yahoo Mail, then to Google’s Gmail. Or you can have accounts on three services and keep all your contacts in each one.
That’ the way things were — until Facebook appeared. Facebook took a different approach until recently, everything you put into Facebook could not be exported anywhere. In effect, you didn’t own your data. Facebook did.
Of course this is rubbish. The reality is that Facebook wants to make it difficult, if not impossible, for you to leave.
Now that policy has sparked a fight between Google and Facebook. Google is angry because its users can, and often do, export their Gmail contact information into Facebook. But those people can’t bring Facebook information back into Gmail.
Earlier this month Google declared it would block exports of its data to Facebook. In a shameless move, Facebook broke through Google’s roadblock so its users could keep pulling data from Google.
Google said it was “disappointed’’ with Facebook’s behavior. It also created a warning screen to tell Gmail users that if they export their information to Facebook they won’t get it back.
Basically, Facebook’s position with major IT companies is this: if you want access to all the information we’ve collected, strike a deal with us. Microsoft and Yahoo have done that, and now, like magic, they can export Facebook contact information into their systems, while Google still can’t.

Remember the early days of the Net, when everything was going to be open and flee? That was great until people realized that their user data could be turned into gold. Now there are billions involved, and nobody is playing nice anymore.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

Contrary to what many people believe, highly intelligent children are not necessarily bound to have an academic success. In fact, so-called gifted students may fail to do well because they are unusually smart. Ensuring that a gifted child reaches his or her potential requires an understanding of what can go wrong and how to satisfy the unusual learning requirements of extremely bright young people.
One common problem gifted kids face is that they, and those around them, place too much importance on being smart. Such an emphasis can breed a belief that bright people do not have to work hard to do well. Although smart kids may not need to work hard in the lower grades when the work is easy, they may struggle and perform poorly when the work gets harder because they do not make the effort to learn. In some cases, they may not know how to study, having never done it before. In others, they simply cannot accept the fact that some tasks require effort.
If the scholastic achievement of highly intelligent children remains below average for an extended period, many teachers will fail to recognize their potential. As a result, such students may not get the encouragement they need, and may further be depressed to learn. They may fall far behind in their schoolwork and even develop behavior problems. Boys may turn aggressive or become class clowns (小丑). Girls often develop performance anxiety and other symptoms such as stomachaches.
One way to avoid such difficulties is to recognize that IQ is just one of the elements for success. Children do well or struggle in school for a host of reasons apart from IQ, according to psychologist Franz Monks of the University of Nijmegen in the Netherlands. These include motivation and persistence, social competence, and the support of family, educators and friends. Emphasizing the importance of persistence and hard work, for example, will help a child avoid the laziness trap. Gifted children also need intellectual challenges-to teach them how to work hard.
