With technological advances, the first half of the twentieth century saw a movement of workers away from agricultural to industrial production. The second half saw a movement from industrial production to services. So far, technological advances have not reduced our need for service workers. But what would happen if advances in artificial intelligence (AI) should greatly increase the productivity of service workers, as suggested by the following scene?
Andrea calls the doctor's office with a medical concern. The doctor's automated telephone system, in a friendly and personal voice, asks her a series of questions. Based on Andrea's answers and in consultation with her insurer's claim system, the doctor's system directs her to a neighborhood lab for tests. At the lab, another automated system performs the prescribed tests, makes a diagnosis, and provides the appropriate medication, all while in contact with Andrea's insurer. As the service is completed, the insurer pays the cost of the service. Andrea signs for any co-payment, to be paid automatically from her bank account. Heading home, Andrea was happily spared from long waits and a hurried contact with the doctor.
To anticipate the realization of such a scene and its timing, we should watch the industries with the most potential for early application of AI. These would be where services are already provided at a distance (airline reservations were an early example). Once widespread in these industries, AI will have built the necessary level of trust and acceptance to move into more and more service industries.
The critical issue now is that such changes could lead to considerable reduction in service jobs at a time when people will want to (or need to) work longer. Services in the first half of the twenty-first century might thus resemble manufacturing in the second half of the twentieth century, with considerable unemployment and significant incentives(诱因) for early retirement. If we are to minimize the panic, we need first to see it coming.

从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

Humankind’s way of life has depended on technology since the beginning of civilization. It can indeed be argued that civilization began when humans first used technologies.
Ranking in importance early developments against subsequent ones is not easy, especially as the primitive technologies were independently developed in widely separated societies. Any such ranking is full of difficulties as was the recent poll that asked the public how they would rank Britain’s greatest inventions; electricity generation, which is the foundation of almost every current technology, the jet engine, which made possible our international mobility, the invention of vaccination: that saved millions of lives, the possibilities seemed endless. Well, the public chose none of these, but instead the safety bicycle.
The bicycle is of course a smart, practical, and sustainable invention, which brought new opportunities for people in all walks of life, and which continues to offer benefits today. But to place it ahead of the fundamental accomplishments of Faraday, Stephenson and Maxwell demonstrates in my mind a profound misunderstanding of the contribution of advanced technologies to our lives. I am afraid I cannot view the safety bicycle as significant contender(竞争物). But the fact that so many people thought that it was of such great significance surely indicates a failure in communication and understanding.
The cost of this major social failure will progressively disadvantage all of us. Technology is determining the future of the human race. We need it to satisfy our appetite for energy, to help us cope with the problem of hunger through plant breeding throughout the world, to monitor and find the means for avoiding global warming, so that we can rescue our planet for future generations. Technology can improve our health, and lengthen our lives. We should recognize this and give it the status that it deserves.

Man’s mind is his tool of survival. The mind is used to gain, use, store, and recall knowledge. It is his mind that enables a farmer to know what to plant, when to harvest it, how to prepare food from the result. It is his mind that enables a hunter to know what he needs to make a spear, how to make it, and how to use it. And it is his mind that enables a blacksmith to know how to make iron tools. In short, it is the mind that enables a person to know what to do in order to survive.
Man’s mind allows long-range planning and thinking. It enables such long-range planning as required for farming, hunting, and tool making. These efforts require the ability to form concepts of long-term cause and effect chains. “I need to make a spear tonight so I can hunt tomorrow and have food for the next 7 days.” There may be environments where people could survive for a while without long-range planning, but without the results of knowledge like spears, fire, and other technologies, people would get out — bred by other animals and die out.
Man’s mind is his tool for survival, but like all tools, it must be properly used. The mind makes good use of knowledge, and knowledge can only be obtained through reason. Without reason, there is no knowledge, and thus no survival.
You must recognize reality and act in accordance with it in order to be successful. To the extent that you use reason as your method of judgment in knowledge and action, you will survive and flourish. If you ignore or escape from reality you will suffer and die.
It is very important to note that survival by reason requires the freedom to act according to your reason. That is why people do not develop well in the control of others, and cannot survive when they are subject to force that destroys their ability to act on reason.

Some people might think that Father’s Day was established as holiday to help greeting card companies sell more cards. However, when Father's Day was first suggested in the early 1900s, Father's Day cards hadn't been invented yet.
The idea of celebrating Father's Day was actually inspired by Mother's Day. In 1909, Mother's Day was just becoming very popular in the United States. One day, Sonora Dodd, of Spokane, Washington, was listening to a church talk about setting aside a day to honor one's mother. It gave her the idea to propose a day to honor fathers, and in particular, her own father — William Jackson Smart.
Mr. Smart had raised Sonora and her five brothers and sisters all by himself after Sonora's mother died in childbirth. As an adult, Sonora realized the selflessness her father had shown in raising his children as a single parent. Her father made all the parental sacrifices. In the daughter's eyes, her father was a courageous, selfless, and loving man.
Mrs. Dodd went to her minister and others about having a church service devoted to fathers on June 5, her father's birthday. That date was too soon for her minister to prepare a service, so he spoke two weeks later on June 19. It took about a year of working with politicians, religious leaders, businessmen and the local Young Men's Christian Association to bring life to her idea of an annual Father's Day. Eventually all her hard work paid off. On June 19, 1910, the first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane, Washington.
In 1972 President Richard Nixon established a permanent national celebration of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday in June. Since then, fathers have been honored and recognized by their families throughout the U.S. on that date.
Father's Day has become a day to not only honor your father, but all men who act as father figure. Stepfathers, uncles, grandfathers, and adult male friends are all honored on Father's Day. It's also another day for greeting card companies and shop owners to celebrate because sales of the most popular gifts for Dad (shirts, ties, and electric shavers) increase considerably.

Parents can have a great impact on the development of their children's creativity in art. But first, they have to know how. They may find the following advice interesting and instructive.
Encourage free drawing rather than coloring books. Coloring books stop the possibility of self-expression. A child may just enjoy colorful pictures and never learn how to express himself. As an art teacher says, "Children have a very powerful instinct to draw freely and roughly. Such practice makes them learn language easily." In fact, a child expresses himself in rough drawing. This is the beginning of literacy and creativity. Also, parents should not teach their kids "how" to draw and they should not make their kids draw realistic pictures to entertain themselves. Experience tells us that such teaching from the parents will discourage children, making them think they can't do it the "right" way.
Competition and rewards should also be avoided in the process of artistic creation. A child's natural instinct to create will disappear if he or she thinks about prize while drawing.
Parents should be role models for their kids. They should not say things like, "I can't draw a straight line.” Instead, they should learn to say, "I love to create.” This teaches children that the process of creation is more important than the product. If children see their parents drawing, cooking or building creatively, they will do the same.
Buy a notebook for your child to use every day. This can be a journal for making up stories, writing ideas and drawing pictures. Even the youngest child can use it to draw freely and roughly, expressing himself.
Take your child to places that promote ideas and creativity. Art museums, science centers, libraries and children's museums all are great places to see other people's creativity. That will inspire children to make their own creations and inventions.
Give children choices and free time. Some of the best ideas come from daydreaming and imagining.
In short, parents should allow their kids to have the freedom to invent for themselves. That means not always teaching and commanding.

American scientists are developing an "intelligent” mobile phone capable of blocking incoming calls depending on the owner’s mood. Using "context aware” technology the "Sensay" phone will monitor calls and send back polite messages saying the user may be contacted later.
A research team at the Institute for Complex Engineering Systems at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, are developing body temperature and electrical skin monitors to help the device understand the emotional state of its user. If the phone senses that the user is busy——for instance, involved in a conversation——it might block an incoming call and turn it onto voicemail. The phone would send back a text message saying the user is unavailable, but advising that if the matter is urgent the caller can try again in three minutes. If a call from the same person came in again, the phone would put it through.
The researchers are interested in four basic different states——busy and not to be interrupted, physically active, idle, and "normal. " Most people are said to change between these states, an average of 6 to 12 times a day.
Professor Asim Smailagic, a leading member of the Carnegie Mellon team, told The Engineer magazine. "Today’s computers are pretty dumb compared with the device. We got to work at the beginning of May and since then have been improving it. The next stage is to make it smarter, adding various intelligence systems so it can learn about the user. The phone also employs four primary sensors—two microphones to pick up conversations and monitor local noise, a light detector and an accelerometer(加速度计). The light sensor shows if the phone is being carried in a bag or pocket, while the accelerometer determines whether the user is walking, running or standing still. In the future, the sensor box, phone and personal organizer will be combined into one device.”

Lawmakers are raising alarms about sleep-deprived doctors — and if you're concerned, so 'should you sleep' is a funny thing. We're taught that we should get seven or eight hours a night, but lot of us sleep less than that, and some of us actually sleep too much. A study reported that people who routinely sleep more than eight hours a day and are still tired are nearly three times as likely to die of a stroke.
Doctors have their own special sleep problems. Resident doctors(住院医生)are famously sleep deprived. When I was training to become a doctor, it was not unusual to work 40 hours on end without rest. Most of us took it calmly, confident that we could still deliver the highest quality of medical care.
Maybe we shouldn't have been so sure of ourselves. An article in the Journal of the American Medical Association points out that in the morning after 24 hours of sleeplessness, a person's motor performance is comparable to that of someone who is legally drunken. Curiously, doctors, who believe that operating under the influence of drinking is grounds for dismissal, often don't think twice about operating without enough sleep.
"I could tell you a horror story," says Jaya Agrawal, president of the American Medical Student Association. "A doctor was operating after being up for over 36 hours, and he almost fell asleep standing up and nearly face planted into the wound.”
Agrawal's organization is supporting the Patient and Physician Safety and Protection Act of 2001, introduced last November. Its key provisions include an 80-hour workweek and a 24-hour work-shift limit.
Most doctors, however, resist such interference. Dr. Charles Binkley, a senior surgery resident at the University of Michigan, agrees that something needs to be done but believes doctors should be bound by their conscience, not by the government. The U.S. controls the hours of pilots and truck drivers. But until such a system is in place for doctors, patients are on their own.

Electronic waste, also called e-waste, has become an issue of serious concern to environmentalists as a growing number of electronic items are discarded in landfills (垃圾填埋场) every year. Many consumers are not aware that electronics like computers and cell phones actually contain toxins that can enter the soil and damage the environment.
Several nations have passed laws about e-waste to try and keep it out of landfills, or in landfills which are equipped to handle toxic materials. The heavy metals in e-waste pose serious environmental and health risks. While many consumers are trained to think of things like cathode ray tubes (阴极射线管) as dangerous articles that require special disposal most do not connect cell phones for example, with beryllium, a toxic heavy metal which can cause severe damage to the lungs. In addition to the toxins it contains, e-waste also takes a very long time to biodegrade, which means that it will be taking up landfill space for centuries.
The question of what to do with e-waste is a serious one. In the first world many companies have begun to take steps to reduce the amount of e-waste they create. Companies which manufacture electronics are starting to take items back when they are no longer useful so that usable elements like copper can be safely removed and the rest of the electronics can be safely disposed of. However, a large portion of unwanted electronics in the first world is being shipped to the third world.
Sometimes this e-waste is shipped under the cover of humanitarian (人道主义的) reasons, arguing that old technology can still help bridge the gap between first and third world. Slow computers which are not wanted in the United States, for example, might make a big difference to someone living in Africa. However, much of this equipment actually arrives in an unusable and broken state, and people desperate for money try to harvest usable materials such as valuable metals from donated equipment. Unfortunately, most of these individuals lack training in how to handle the dangerous materials used in electronics manufacture, and expose themselves and their communities to toxic chemicals and metals.

Work is a very important part of life in the United States. Americans spend most of their lives working. For most Americans, their work defines them: They are what they do. What happens, then, when a person can no longer work?
Most Americans stop working at the age of sixty-five or seventy and retire. Because work is such an important part of life in this culture, retirement can be very difficult. Retirees often feel that they are useless and unproductive. Of course, some people are happy to retire; but leaving one's job, whatever it is, is a difficult change, even for those who look forward to retiring. Retirement can also bring financial problems. Many people depend on Social Security checks every month. During their working years, employees contribute a certain percentage of their salaries to the government. Each employer also gives a certain percentage to the government. When people retire, they receive this money as income. These checks do not provide enough money to live on, however, because prices are increasing very rapidly. Senior citizens, those over sixty-five, have to have savings in the bank or other retirement plans to make ends meet. The rate of inflation (通货膨胀) is forcing prices higher each year; Social Security checks alone cannot cover these growing expenses. The government offers some assistance, but many senior citizens have to change their life-styles after retirement. They have to spend carefully to be sure that they can afford to buy food, fuel, and other necessities.
Of course, many senior citizens are happy with their retirement. They have time to spend with their families or to enjoy their hobbies. Some continue to work part time; others do volunteer work. Some, like those in the Retired Business Executives Association, even help young people to get started in new business. Many retired citizens also belong to "Golden Age" groups. These organizations plan trips and social events. There are many other opportunities for retirees.

Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) is an examination that American high school students take before they go to college. The SAT is open to anyone who pays a $25 fee, and parents are having their kids take it at younger and younger ages—for practice, and for a chance to get into programs for gifted children at universities like Johns Hopkins. More than 172,000 students in the eighth grade or lower took SAT or ACT college entrance exams last year, up 19% since 1996.
Donna Coughlin, who is in charge of the SAT in Winnetka, Illinois, says the wave in young test takers makes for a terrible day. Young kids ask endless questions, do more restlessness, need more bathroom breaks and are more apt to throw up(呕吐).
Much of the SAT's material isn't taught until high school, so younger children often score poorly. Critics say giving the test so early weakens the confidence of insecure kids and creates competitive students who focus not on learning but on mastering standardized tests.
Those who favor early testing say it allows bright students to see how far beyond grade level they are, so their learning can be adjusted. And some bright kids enjoy the challenge. "It gives them terrific experience at test taking“, says Susan Grant, whose son first tried the SAT in the sixth grade and now attends Harvard.
There's even a practice run for young test takers. To join "gifted" programs, students in grades 3 through 6 can take an ACT designed for eighth-graders. It's not for my kids, though. They have cartoons to watch, CDs to play, childhoods to live.

The amount of time kids spend online is a source of frustration for many parents. Initially, parents welcomed the Internet into their homes, believing they were opening up an exciting new world of educational opportunities for their children. However, many parents soon realized that, instead of using the Internet for homework or research, their kids were spending hours exchanging messages with friends, playing online games or talking to strangers in chat rooms.
Maintaining a healthy balance between entertainment media and other activities in their children's lives has always been a challenge for parents. The Internet has made this challenge even more difficult. The engaging nature of Internet communications and interactive games means many children and teens have trouble keeping track of time when they're online.
Unfortunately, parents and teachers are usually not aware that there is a problem until it becomes serious. This is because it is easy to hide what you are doing online and because Internet addiction is not widely recognized by the medical community. And mental health practitioners continue to debate whether this behavior is an ”addiction,” with some identifying it as “compulsive behavior.”
Children and young people can easily become hooked on online activities such as multi-user games, instant messaging and chat rooms. The most vulnerable children, according to the Computer-Addiction Services at Harvard Medical School, are those who are ”lonely and bored or from families where nobody is at home to relate to after school.”
Children who are unpopular or shy with peers are often attracted to the opportunities for creating new identities in online communities. Boys, in particular, are frequent users of online role-playing games, where they assume new identities and interact with other players. Although playing these games with other users may appear to be social activity, for the introverted(内向的) child or teen, excessive playing can further isolate them from friends and peers.

Atmospheric scientists first used the term “greenhouse effect” in the early 1800s. At that time, it was used to describe the naturally occurring functions of trace gases in the atmosphere and did not have any negative meanings. It was not until the mid-1950s that the term greenhouse effect was coupled with concern over climate change. And in recent decades, we often hear about the greenhouse effect in somewhat negative terms.
The negative concerns are related to the possible impacts of an enhanced greenhouse effect. It is important to remember that without the greenhouse effect, life on the earth would not be possible.
While the earth's temperature is dependent upon the greenhouse-like action of the atmosphere, the amount of heating and cooling are strongly influenced by several factors just as greenhouses are affected by various factors.
In the atmospheric greenhouse effect, the type of surface that sunlight first encounters is the most important factor. Forests, grasslands, ocean surfaces, ice caps, deserts, and cities all absorb, reflect, and radiate radiation differently. Sunlight falling on a white glacier (冰河) surface strongly reflects back into space, resulting in minimal heating of the surface and lower atmosphere. Sunlight falling on a dark desert soil is strongly absorbed, on the other hand and contributes to significant heating of the surface and lower atmosphere. Cloud cover also affects greenhouse warming by both reducing the amount of solar radiation reaching the earth's surface and by reducing the amount of radiation energy emitted into space.
Scientists use the term albedo to define the percentage of solar energy reflected back by a surface. Understanding local, regional, and global albedo effects is critical to predicting global climate change.

It was nine o'clock in the evening when my stomach began to growl and complain of emptiness. There's a Subway Sandwich Shop on the corner of our street, and the cool nights here in Arizona make it an enjoyable ten minute walk. We live on the outer edge of Tucson, and people that live in the desert go to bed early.
Stepping inside the sandwich shop it pleases me to realize that the lone customer is me. A young employee, Randy, is sitting behind the counter reading a book. He glances up from his reading, and seems to be mildly annoyed by my presence.
I' m right in the middle of explaining to Randy what type of roll I want for my turkey sub(长形汉堡) when man with shotgun bursts through the door. He must really be hungry. He waves the shotgun in the general direction of Randy and demands money instead. Didn't this guy see the ATM machine over in the corner? He must be too hungry to notice.
Randy is starting to sweat heavily and shaking. He empties the register, and is attempting to hand the cash to the gunman. Then the gunman swings the shotgun in my direction as if noticing me for the first time. It can be irritating when nobody pays attention to you. He hits me in the stomach with the shotgun causing my breath to take leave of my body. In the next moment I'm on my hands and knees as if inspecting the floor, which doesn't seem particularly clean. During my extensive examination of the floor, the gunman has made his escape. Randy calls 911 and shouts over the counter to inquire about my condition. His concern for my welfare is touching, but I'm disappointed that he doesn't ask if I want cheese on my sub.
I'm breathing normally by the time the police arrive, but my stomach hurts. The next hour is spent giving statements, declining medical treatment, and devouring my long awaited sub. My buddy Randy gave me the sandwich for free, but the turkey was dry. The police gave me a ride back to the house, and it was nice not to be in cuffs(手铐) this time.

Many people think New York is a noisy city. In fact, scientists who study noise say that the average noise level in New York is 72.5 decibels. This is a little louder than normal conversation, which is 65 decibels. The noise level is the result of so many people and cars in the same area.
Now even the insides of taxis are noisy. When you get into a taxi, you hear the voice of a well-known singer, sports reporter, or Broadway actress giving instructions. That's right. The voice of a famous person tells you what to do. One popular singer gives this message: "Cats have nine lives, but you have only one, so fasten your seat belt!" Other, voices say things such as "Don't forget to collect all your belongings."(People often leave hats, umbrellas, and bags in taxis.)
There is a good reason for the messages. There are more than 12,000 cabs in New York, and every year taxis get into more than 15,000 accidents. In an accident, people who don't wear seat belts hit the partition, the glass wall separating the driver and passengers in the taxi. They can hurt their foreheads or break their noses or chins. Every year, about 11,000 people are injured in this way.
Many people are annoyed by the voices. Cabdrivers in particular dislike the messages. "I play the messages 12 hours a day. I hear the same voices 60 times a day. It makes me crazy," says Amir, a 45-year-old cabdriver. "But if I don't play the messages, I get fined $100." A lot of passengers complain too. “It's too much noise,” says a passenger. "I asked the driver to turn off the message, but he said he can't."
Other people think the voices are a great idea. One taxi driver says, "People like to hear the famous voices, and they put on their seat belts more often." And passengers from out of town really like the idea. "Most of the time, taxi drivers are in a bad mood," says Melanie Benton, who visits New York often on business, "It's nice to hear a cheerful voice when you get into a cab."

Living in Brazil (巴西)and Switzerland
Moving to a different city may seem difficult. You have to change schools and get used to your new home. But you can always go back to that city to visit. When you move to another country, things are different. However, difficult as it may be, the experience can be rewarding.
My dad, a Brazilian, is really funny and can make friends quickly. My mom, a Swiss, is usually quiet and a bit shy. She likes to be organized, but my dad never makes plans. She enjoys staying home, but my dad always wants to go out. Swiss and Brazilian---what a mix!
After my parents got married, they moved to Switzerland. There they had my brother and me. When I was two, we moved to Brazil. During my childhood we visited Switzerland every year.
Many people ask me where I prefer to live: Brazil or Switzerland. It’s really hard to answer because I love both countries. Brazil is a big country with many states and people. There are multiple dialects and many types of foods. People here have beautiful smiles and are always happy, even if they are poor. In the south the climate is cool, but in the north it’s hot and humid.
Switzerland, on the other hand, is small but beautiful and clean. There are four languages in that tiny country. People there are very different from Brazilians: they are wealthy, independent, and organized. The food is delicious, and of course, the famous Swiss chocolate is great, and the climate is dry and cool.
I love both countries. In Switzerland, it's pleasant, calm, and peaceful everywhere. I enjoyed my stay there very much. But now I am happy here in Brazil, I feel excited and at home.

Today's video game worlds in the U.S.A. are so detailed that they give the player a realistic and rewarding experience. It is not just children that play these games; it is also common for men from 18 to 30 have at home some sort of game console(控制器).
People think this may affect real-life behavior and ask ‘are life-like computer games a good thing?’, especially the first-person games where the player takes on active roles like shooting at others in armed battles.
As modern characters in computer games have become more people-like than cartoon-like, as the language becomes more informal or casual, and as the sound effects become more realistic, many kinds of concern have been raised about the link between computer games and the children's aggressive behavior. Worried parents have welcomed the computer game classification, which is similar to film ratings. This makes it easier for parents to monitor what their children are playing with.
Are computer games making us more aggressive? There is no evidence that proves a link between an increase in computer game violence and aggressive or violent behavior in children, but the question still arises: is it acceptable for computer games to depict life-like scenes of violence?
What lessons do players take from games like Grand Theft Auto where players speed through city streets trying to reach their destination in the quickest time regardless of people walking along the streets in their way or Hooligans: Storms over Europe where men run violently into football fields, fight competitors and attack police. Do you think these computer games make it difficult to tell right from wrong and fact from fiction?

It is difficult to estimate the number of youngsters involved in home schooling, where children are not sent to school and receive their formal education from one or both parents. Legislation and court decisions have make it legally possible in most states for parents to educate their children at home, and each year more people take advantage of that opportunity.
Supporters of home education claim that it is less expensive and far more efficient than mass public education. Moreover they quote several merits: relief of school overcrowding, added curricular and pedagogical (课程和教学法) alternatives, strengthened family relationships, lower dropout rates, increased motivation, higher standardized test scores, and reduced discipline problems. Supporters of home schooling also believe that it provides the parents with the opportunity to reinforce their moral values through education.
Critics of home schooling movement claim that it creates as many problems as it solves. They acknowledge that, in a few cases, home schooling offers educational opportunities superior to those found in most public schools, but few parents can provide such educational advantages. Some parents who withdraw their children form the schools in favor of home schooling have an inadequate educational background and insufficient formal training to provide a satisfactory education for their children. Typically, parents have fewer, not more technological resources available than do schools. However, the relatively inexpensive computer technology that is readily available today is causing some challenge to the notion that home schooling is in any way not so good as more highly structured classroom education.

Finally, a sociological (社会学) concern is the restricted social interaction experienced by children who are educated at home. Technology will never replace the pupil-teacher relationship. Also, while relationships with parents and brothers and sisters may be improved, children taught at home may develop a distorted (歪曲的) view of society.

When I was about six years old, my mother came home one day and found that I had collected half a dozen babies of the neighbourhood — all of them too young to walk — and had them sitting before me on the floor while I was teaching them to wave their arms. When she asked the explanation of this, I informed her that it was my school of dance. She was amused, and placing herself at the piano, she began to play for me. This school continued and became very popular. Later on, little girls of the neighbourhood came and their parents paid me a small sum to teach them. This was the beginning of what afterwards proved a very lucrative occupation.
My mother took me to a famous ballet teacher, but his lessons did not please me. When the teacher told me to stand on my toes I asked him why, and when he replied “Because it is beautiful,” I said that it was ugly and against nature and after the third lesson I left his class, never to return. This stiff and commonplace gymnastics which he called dancing only disturbed my dream. I dreamed of a different dance. I did not know just what it would be, but I was feeling out towards an invisible world into which I guessed I might enter if I found the key.
My art was already in me when I was a little girl, and it was owing to the heroic and adventurous spirit of my mother that it was not stifled. I believe that whatever the child is going to do in life should be begun when it is very young. I wonder how many parents realize that by the so-called education they are giving their children, they are only driving them into the commonplace, and depriving them of any chance of doing anything beautiful or original.

How to Forgive, Forget and Let Go
1.Forgiving someone does not mean releasing them from an earlier guilt. What if the person who wronged you is not living? What if the person is someone who made you extremely embarrassed during school 20 or 30 years ago? Letting go of emotional pain does not mean that nothing happened; it means that you no longer want to be controlled by it.
2.Recognize that forgiveness is not denial. Whatever caused the pain was a real incident. Denying that it happened means it is too painful to work through the emotions. There is no timeline on forgiveness. Some steps take longer to get through, and it is acceptable to set them aside for a period of time. Part of forgiveness is understanding whether or not someone takes responsibility for what happened, and may even show regret.
3.Understand that not everyone who forgives reconciles with the person who caused the pain. There are relationships that are harmful and even physically dangerous. While it is possible to forgive the past and move beyond it, it may also mean that the person who was involved can no longer play an active role in your life. If a person or situation is not safe, it may be best not to reconcile the relationship now. Work on forgiveness at a time when you are emotionally healthy and physically safe.
4.Make a conscious decision to forgive someone. Even if they never apologize for what happened, determine within yourself that it is fine to proceed without this apology. Apologies should not be asking for forgiveness. Apologies should be offered as an effort of true regret. They should be admitting that taking personal responsibility for the situation is important. Even without that apology, make up your mind to forgive, forget, and eventually let go.
