Just Introduce Yourself
It's so easy to walk into your first job and feel like a stranger in a strange land. But you don't have to stay that way, and you shouldn't.
You have to remind yourself to kick your shyness away and introduce yourself. Just a hand shake will do. Ask the supervisor who hired you to introduce you around a bit. That's the best way to make contacts. Then you'll know what to do and say when you meet these people again.
Don't do what my friend Sue did at her first job at Entertainment Weekly. “That is one of my biggest regrets: I hardly talked to anyone at all when I was there. I was scared and just thought people would talk to me first. For a long time, I was hung up on the thought that if someone was older, I respected them automatically. And even if someone started on Monday, and I started Tuesday, I just felt they had more experience. In the area I worked for four months, I hardly spoke to these people,” she said.
“Of course, now I realize that was the most stupid thing. If I could do that again, I'd remember that it's so important not to feel shy about introducing yourself. It's not like you have to be very bold, ready to take over the place. Just introduce yourself and ask if there is anything you can do for them. That breaks the ice.”
Sue believes that if she had introduced herself around a bit, there would be just no telling what other opportunities or what other acquaintances she might have now. Not that she regrets where she is now at all. But had she talked to more people at her first job, “maybe it would have helped me get somewhere sooner,” she said.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

In last week's Science, a group of leading investigators led by John Beddington, the chief science adviser for the British government, published a call warning climate change has become a growing threat to agricultural production and food security. In other words, the potential risks to farming are another reason why we need to reduce the carbon in the air. And the fact that the climate is already changing, and will continue to change, means that we also need to start adapting agriculture to a warmer world immediately.
How exactly could climate change lower our ability to feed ourselves? Warming alone could do it, with already hot and dry places-like the American Southwest or the Horn of Africa-predicted to become hotter and drier. The terrible droughts that have affected Texas and East Africa lead to an extreme shortage of food in the latter case. While additional carbon in the air may help some plants, warmer temperatures can also slow down growth, so extreme heat could lead to greater crop loss.
It's not just drought, though; rain at the wrong time can be extremely bad for agriculture as well. That was obvious during the great floods in Pakistan in 2010 which not only killed thousands of people but also washed away crops. Those losses helped drive food prices to record highs during the past year, a level from which they're only now beginning to drop. As the atmosphere warms, it can hold more water, which means we can expect heavier storms when the rain does fall.
Warming isn't the only threat to our ability to feed ourselves. It acts together with rising population and other factors. That's why scientists are calling for more joint research as the first step to adapting agriculture to climate change. "The window of opportunity to prevent a climate crisis is rapidly closing, and we need better information and tools to balance how we grow our food and use our resources,"says Molly Jahn, dean of College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Wisconsin. If we hope to live well in a warmer world, we have no other choice.

Passage One

Many language learners fail to realize that when they listen to their native language, they do not actually hear every word. They also fail to understand that they integrate their knowledge about language with their experience and knowledge of such things as topic and culture, and do not need to hear to hear every word. This means that learners often have unrealistic expectations and try to understand each word of a listening text.
As some experts point out, “such total comprehension…is a misconception of how normal comprehension works in the native language.” Learners’ anxiety may get worse when a classroom procedure does not provide adequate context for the text or prepare the topic by activating their prior knowledge;in other words, a procedure which asks students to “Listen to the text and then answer the questions.” This tests listening ability rather than aiming to teach it. Adults returning to English language learning whose earlier experiences have been of this nature may have developed negative perceptions of their ability as listeners and a major task for the teacher will be to build confidence.
This means recognizing anxiety and a major tasking care to provide positive classroom experiences. For example, the teacher needs to make sure that the pace and length of a listening activity is not too taxing as the concentration required in trying to comprehend unfamiliar sounds can be tiring.

Body Language
Body language is the unspoken communication that goes on in every face-to-face encounter with another human being. It tells you their true feelings towards you and how well your words are being received. Between 50-100% of our message is communicated through our body language. Only 7-10% is the result of actual words we use in a conversation.
Eye contact is one of the most important ways of dealing with others, especially people we've just met. Keeping good eye contact shows respect and interest in what they have to say. In the UK, people tend to keep eye contact around 60-70% of the time. (However, there are wide cultural differences, so be careful in other countries.) By doing this, you give them a feeling of comfort and real warmth. Otherwise, they will feel you are lacking interest in them or their conversation.
Head position is a great one to play around with yourself and others. When you want to feel confident and self-assured, keep your head level both straight and upright. You can also use this straight head position when you want to be powerful and what you're saying to be taken seriously. If you want to be friendly, tilt (倾斜) your head just a little to one side or other.
Hand gestures are so many and varied that it's hard to give a brief guide, but here goes. Palms (手掌) slightly up and outward is seen as open and friendly. Palm-down gestures are generally seen as commanding, emphasizing and possibly aggressive (挑衅的). This palm-up, palm-down is very important when it comes to handshaking and we suggest you always offer a handshake upright, which should convey equality.
Distance from others is crucial if you want to give off the right signals. Stand too close and you'll be marked as "stubborn" (顽固的,棘手的). Stand or sit too far away and you'll be "keeping your distance". Neither is what we want, so observe how close all the other people are to each other if in a group. Also notice if you move closer to someone and they back away. You're probably a bit too much in their personal space, their comfort zone.

Talk to Your Kids about Their Eating Habits Carefully

Weight is never an easy subject. It can be risky for parents to raise the issue of eating habits and weight with their kids.
“No kid ever lost weight because his mother told him he was fat,” a friend told me when I was worried about my son's weight.
It turns out she was right, according to a new study. The study was directed by Dr. Berge at University of Minnesota. She found that kids whose parents discussed eating in a healthy way were less likely to have eating problems. But 64% of the kids whose parents focused on their weight turned to unhealthy eating behaviors. Some kids went on extreme diets, and others even ate no food. So eating disorders were caused. Things were worse when fathers joined in the discussions with their daughters and focused on weight. “Fathers should never comment on their daughters' weight,” says Berge. Instead, she suggests, fathers should focus on their daughters’ interests. That can help them feel loved and confident enough to work on their weight issues.
How should parents talk to kids about eating behaviors? According to Berge, they should avoid focusing on how much their kids weigh. They should talk to them about being healthy. Don’t compare them with others. Ideally, both parents should share the responsibility. If that's not possible, choose the parent whose words cause the least amount of stress and who demonstrates healthy eating.

Online Shopping
According to the fourth report on online shopping habits made by MasterCard, consumers from the Chinese mainland have kept high enthusiasm for online shopping, with 84 percent of respondents(答卷者) claiming that online shopping is their major aim for Internet surfing, compared with 67 percent of Taiwan consumers and 50 percent of Hong Kong consumers. Among all online shoppers, young students aged between 25 and 34 and female consumers are the main forces for online shopping.

The survey shows that more than two thirds of respondents from the Chinese mainland are satisfied about online shopping. Price and quality are two big issues for online shoppers, especially the quality of health, beauty and nutrition products. Sellers with high credits are more welcomed and many consumers said that they would prefer buying products from credible(可信的) sellers even if they charge higher prices.

For many consumers, lower price is the major factor that changes consumers from physical shops to the Internet. Most consumers make purchasing plans and compare product shows and prices on the Internet before they buy, but consumers from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong have different online shopping habits-many mainland consumers tend to do random (随意的) shopping, with 70 percent buying after comparing while 80 percent of Hong Kong and 87.5 percent of Taiwan consumers prefer making consumption plans before they buy.

Among all shopping websites, those selling books, videos, DVDs, home appliances( 器具), electronic products, clothes and music downloading websites are the most popular while promotions(促销) at websites of restaurants, medicine, supermarkets, and clothes get the most attention. Consumers from the Chinese mainland prefer buying home appliances and electronic products online while those from Taiwan and Hong Kong prefer searching for information and buying air tickets and hotels.

The survey was done from September 3rd to October 1st, 2010, with 8500 consumers from 15 markets such as China, Australia Japan, South Africa and Thailand.

Mind Your Manners
In England recently three foreigners came to a bus stop and waited. About five minutes later, the bus they wanted came along. They were just going to get on when suddenly there was a loud noise behind them. People rushed onto the bus and tried to push them out of the way. Someone shouted at them. The bus conductor came rushing down the stairs to see what all the trouble was about. The three foreigners seem all at sea and looked embarrassed. No one had told them about the British custom of lining up for a bus that the first person who arrives at the bus stop is the first person to get on the bus.
Learning the language of a country isn't enough. If you want to have a pleasant visit, find out as much as possible about the manners and customs of your host country. You will probably be surprised just how different they can be from your own. A visitor to India would do well to remember that people there consider it impolite to use the left hand for passing food at table. The left hand is supposed to be used for washing yourself. Also in India, you might see a man shaking his head at another to show that he doesn’t agree. But in many parts of India, a shake of the head means agreement. Nodding your head when you are given a drink in Bulgaria will most probably leave you thirsty. In that country, you shake your head to mean “yes” — a nod means “no”.
At a meal in countries on the Arabic Peninsula, you will find that your glass is repeatedly refilled as soon as you drink up. If you think that you have had enough, you should take the cup or glass in your hand and give it a little shake from side to side or place your hand over the top.
In Europe, it is quite usual to cross your legs when you are sitting and talking to someone even at an important meeting. Doing this in Thailand, however, could bring about trouble. Also, you should try to avoid touching the head of an adult — it’s just not done in Thailand.

A Good Lesson
After living in Europe for seven years, my parents decided that my family would move to the United States. We all looked forward to this. What would people think of us? For me, I hoped to be the hero of the class.
I was not disappointed. All my classmates admired my experience, and I quickly became well known as “the French guy”. I was very popular for a time. However, I was not interested in many things my classmates did, and it was hard for me to connect with them. I enjoyed listening to classical music, never watched TV, and almost never watched movies.
I did not have a common background with my friends because I grew up in Europe. I was a bit of an idiot to many people around me. I kept talking proudly about my experience. And I thought myself better than those around me because I lived in Europe but they didn’t.
I had decided I wanted better friends when my parents said that we were going to move again! I saw this as a perfect chance to get better friends, where people did not know of my unkind past.
When we moved to California, I did not show off as I had done for five years. I did not tell everyone that I lived in Europe. I still listened to classical music, but I just kept my music to myself. Sure enough, I found that people like someone who is not typical but does not boast about it.
Nothing can replace good friends, and if I had to control my temper and pride, it was well worth it.

Christmas Gift

Mary didn't know what to send to her grandparents for Christmas. It was always hard to choose a good Christmas present for them. They didn't need much, and it was hard for her to be creative every year.
One year, she sent them a big wooden elephant. It sat on the counter for a year, but then it disappeared, probably into a closet somewhere. Another year, she made handmade soaps with nice smells, but they probably weren’t any better than store-bought soaps. Last year, she sent lots of nice pictures of herself in frames, but grandparents' house was small, and they couldn't hang up very many.
This year, she decided on fruit. She lived where it was warm and there was lots of nice fruit. Her grandparents lived up north, where it was colder and they couldn't get fresh fruit all year, or at least not oranges and grapefruit. Fresh fruit was healthy for her grandparents, too.
Mary went to a fruit store and sampled the red oranges. She really liked them and bought a kilogram. Then she tried three kinds of grapefruit. The white ones were sour. The star grapefruit were interesting, but the dark red grapefruit were great. So she got a kilogram. Mary carefully packed the fruit in a box to keep them safe and dry in case one got smashed and its juice got everywhere. Then she wrote the address on the box and mailed it from the store. She felt happy with what she bought.
A few days later, Mary got a phone call from her grandparents, thanking her for the lovely fruit. They said it was a healthy, tasty, and very thoughtful gift. Mary had never felt so good before.

When traveling the world, you will certainly run into customs that differ from ones in your country. This is what makes traveling fun, and indeed why many people travel in the first place. Probably one of the differences that people take notice of first is body language and gestures.
Body language is just as varied around the world. Often, something that we take for granted as meaning one thing can mean something completely different elsewhere. For example, in Thailand, as the foot is the lowest part of the body it is held in the lowest esteem. To point a foot at someone is extremely insulting. Likewise, as the head is the highest part of the body, it is never touched directly by others. A pat on the head in Western society might mean a job well done, but in Thailand it is an insult of the worst kind.
As mentioned before, greetings in Asia consist of a bow. In Japan, your hands are at your side; elsewhere they may be in prayer position. The inferior person will bow longer and lower. In Mediterranean countries on the other hand, a kiss on each cheek is customary. In Latin America, one might greet someone of either sex with a hug and a kiss. In Muslim nations, sexes generally do not mix at all unless they are family. Some simple gestures that are common here in the States such as the "thumbs-up” sign, are rude to those in Middle Eastern countries, Nigeria, Australia and Afghanistan. A two-finger "V" sign with the palm out can mean Victory, but either means the number two or "push it" depending on where you are.
Some gestures have widely different meanings in almost everywhere it is used. For example, in Japan crooking a finger in a "come here" gesture is insulting. In Yugoslavia, Vietnam and Malaysia it is used to call animals, and therefore insulting to people. Even something such as a smile, which seems an instinctive reaction to happiness, can mean sadness or anger. When traveling, it is important to take the time to learn about your hosts customs so that you do not seem ignorant or offensive.

Running: Sport or Way of Life?
You go through the channels several times and find that once again there's nothing on TV that interests you. Not a problem! Just put on some running shoes and comfortable clothes and go for a run.
One of the best things about the sport of running is that you don't need expensive equipment. All you need is a good pair of running shoes and a safe environment. But don't be fooled into thinking the sport of running is easy, it requires discipline and concentration.
Running is good for you both physically and mentally. It strengthens your heart, lungs, and muscles. It makes you more aware of your body. Running also improves your body so that you don't get sick as easily. It can even help you to stay more focused in school because exercise helps you to think more clearly.
How do you get engaged in the sport if you don't know much about it? Most schools offer running programs. A simple internet search can help you find some in your area. Then programs show you how running can offer competition or just be for fun. They also teach runners to set practical goals and take care of their bodies.
Runners have great respect for each other because they know how difficult the sport can be. If you go to a race, you'll see people cheering for all the runners. Running isn't always about how fast you are or how far you're going. It's about getting out there and doing it.
Participation is more important than competition, and effort is recognized over talent.
If you're looking for more than just a sport, running may be the perfect choice for you.

Farms Appear in Cities

When you hear the word “farm”, you may imagine the countryside with cows and crops. But scientists say the farms of the future could be built in tall buildings in some large cities.

It may be difficult to believe but in fact the technology for growing crops indoors already exists. Farming in the city is already happening. Some vegetables are already grown in greenhouses. Even the scientists at the South Pole research station can enjoy fresh vegetables they grow in their own greenhouse.
Experts say indoor farming solves many problems. First, traditional farming takes up a lot of land. Growing crops in tall buildings-called vertical farming(垂直农业)can solve the problem. Also, fruits and vegetables grown indoors would not face serious threats from insects and bad weather.
Though vertical farms don't exist yet, experts have created a plan for recycling in such farms. The water from indoor fish ponds would be used to water crops. Gases from crop waste would be used to heat the building. Waste from chicken or pigs would be reused as a source of energy.
But experts believe vertical farming is not going to be easy. They say it can be difficult to control climate conditions indoors. Besides, plants differ in their weather and lighting needs. For example, some plants like warm, sunny weather, but other plants prefer cooler temperatures.
That’s not to say these difficulties won’t be overcome—but it will take time. Most experts suggest it may take about 5 to 15 years before the first vertical farms could be created.

Vertical farming does not need as much land as traditional farming.()

How men first learned to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations—the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary(文字的)style. Above all, the real poet is master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and rude.
