When traveling the world, you will certainly run into customs that differ from ones in your country. This is what makes traveling fun, and indeed why many people travel in the first place. Probably one of the differences that people take notice of first is body language and gestures.
Body language is just as varied around the world. Often, something that we take for granted as meaning one thing can mean something completely different elsewhere. For example, in Thailand, as the foot is the lowest part of the body it is held in the lowest esteem. To point a foot at someone is extremely insulting. Likewise, as the head is the highest part of the body, it is never touched directly by others. A pat on the head in Western society might mean a job well done, but in Thailand it is an insult of the worst kind.
As mentioned before, greetings in Asia consist of a bow. In Japan, your hands are at your side; elsewhere they may be in prayer position. The inferior person will bow longer and lower. In Mediterranean countries on the other hand, a kiss on each cheek is customary. In Latin America, one might greet someone of either sex with a hug and a kiss. In Muslim nations, sexes generally do not mix at all unless they are family. Some simple gestures that are common here in the States such as the "thumbs-up” sign, are rude to those in Middle Eastern countries, Nigeria, Australia and Afghanistan. A two-finger "V" sign with the palm out can mean Victory, but either means the number two or "push it" depending on where you are.
Some gestures have widely different meanings in almost everywhere it is used. For example, in Japan crooking a finger in a "come here" gesture is insulting. In Yugoslavia, Vietnam and Malaysia it is used to call animals, and therefore insulting to people. Even something such as a smile, which seems an instinctive reaction to happiness, can mean sadness or anger. When traveling, it is important to take the time to learn about your hosts customs so that you do not seem ignorant or offensive.

It is a cold March evening on a farm in South England. Outside, 2000 sheep are standing in the fields. Most of them will give birth to lambs in the following weeks. Inside, their shepherds(牧羊人) are sitting in the warm watching TV.
You might think that the shepherds are neglecting their duty by resting in comfort. However, if you look at the television more closely, you would see that the shepherds are protecting the sheep.
It is part of an experiment to try to increase the survival rate of new lambs. In the past, the shepherds stayed out with their sheep, walking round and helping the mother sheep to give birth. In this experiment, television cameras are used to scan the sheep, and the shepherds are looking at a television monitor which is automatically controlled.
The system has several advantages. Shepherds do not have to walk among the sheep, which tends to disturb the mother sheep that are about to give birth. Instead, they can stay inside, watching by remote control. If there is no problem, they stay away from the sheep. But when they are needed they can quickly go out to help, or to scare away foxes. The experiment is popular with shepherds because it means that they do not have to spend all their time outdoors waiting for the lambs to arrive in freezing weather.
The monitoring system is rented for the few months when the lambs are born. The cost is high, but the farm manager estimates that, since lambs are so valuable, and if about ten more lambs are saved than in a usual year, the experiment will be financially worthwhile. At the same time, the experiment may show that it is possible to make a saving in manpower, especially when a large number of sheep are involved.

从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

Protagoras was a great teacher of ancient Athens. He taught many subjects, including the laws of argument and the use of language. A young man named Evalthus admired him very much and asked him to be his teacher, but he did not want to pay for his lessons at once. After some discussion, however, they agreed that Evalthus should pay only if he won his first case in the law courts. For if he won, he had been taught well.
The lessons began and Evalthus proved himself to be a clever student. A time carne when he had reached the end of his studies, but he refused to pay Protagoras anything whatever.
Protagoras took Evalthus to court and said to the judges, "Whatever you decide, I must be paid. For if you decide in my favor, then I win the case, and so I must be paid. But if you decide against me, then Evalthus has won his first case in the law courts; therefore, according to our agreement, he must pay me for his lessons. So, I must get my money whatever happens.
After considering this argument, the Athenian judges found no fault in it. But they asked Evalthus to reply.
"It is quite clear, said Evaltaus, "I must not pay. For either the judges will decide in my favor, or they will decide against me. If they decide in my favor, then I have won the case, and I must not pay. But if Protagoras wins, then I have lost my first case in the law courts. Therefore, according to our agreement, I do not have to pay him for the lessons. So I need not pay in any event."
As both these arguments appeared to be faultless the judges were unable to come to a decision. They therefore ordered the two men to appear before them again a hundred years later.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

The modern age is an age of electricity. People are so used to electric lights, radios, televisions and telephones that it is hard to imagine what life would be like without them. When there is a power failure, people grope about in the dark, cars hesitate in the streets because there are no traffic lights to guide them and food spoils in silent refrigerators.

Yet, people began to understand how electricity works only a little more than two centuries ago. Nature has apparently been experimenting in this field for millions of years. Scientists are discovering that the living world may hold many interesting secrets of electricity that could benefit humanity.
All living cells send out tiny pulses of electricity. As the heart beats, it sends out electric pulses. They form an electrocardiogram(心电图), which a doctor can study to determine how well the heart is working. The brain, too, sends out brain waves of electricity, which can be recorded in electroencephalogram(脑电图). The electric currents produced by most living cells are extremely small—often so small that sensitive instruments are needed to record them. But in some animals, certain muscle cells have become so specialized in producing electricity that they do not work as muscle cells any more. When large numbers of these cells are linked together, the effects can be astonishing.
The electric eel—a long thin fish with slippery skin—can produce amazingly strong electricity. It can send an electric current as high as eight hundred volts through the water in which it lives. As many as four-fifths of all the cells in the electric eel's body are capable of producing electricity, and the strength of the shock depends on the length of its body.

从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

A gray sweater hung limply(无生气地)on Tommy's empty desk, a reminder of the miserable boy who had just followed his classmates from out third-grade room. Soon Tommy's parents, who had recently separated, would arrive for a conference on his failing schoolwork and troublesome behaviors. Neither parent knew that I had arranged for the other to come.

Tommy, an only child, had always been happy, cooperative and an excellent student. How could I convince his parents that his recent failing grades represented a broken-hearted child's reaction to the separation and coming divorce of the two he so dearly loved?
Tommy's mother entered and took one of the chairs I had placed near my desk. Soon the father arrived. Good! At least they were concerned enough to be prompt. A look of surprise and impatience passed between them, and then they pointedly ignored each other.
As I gave a detailed account of Tommy's behavior and schoolwork, I prayed for the right words to bring these two together, to help them see what they were doing to their son. But somehow the words wouldn't come.
Then I found a crumpled(揉成一团的)tear-stained sheet stuffed in the back of Tommy's desk. Silently I smoothed it out and gave it to Tommy's mother. She read it and then without a word handed it to he husband. He frowned. Then his face softened. He studied the scrawled words for a long time.
At last he folded the paper carefully, placed it in his pocket, and reached for his wife's outstretched hand. She wiped the tears from her eyes and smiled up at him. Tears welled up in my eyes, but neither seemed to notice. He helped her with her coat and they left together.
It was the sheet of yellow copy paper covered with the painful outburst of a small boy's troubled heart that helped me. On both sides of it was single sentence written over and over again:"Dear Mom…Dear Daddy…I love you…I love you…I love you."

Reading Comprehension

从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选项中选择一个最佳答案。

Joe was driving home one evening. Ever since the Levis factory closed, he'd been unemployed, and with winter raging on, the chill had finally hit home. Most of his friends had already left the Midwestern town, but he stayed on. After all, he was born here.
It was getting dark and light snow was coming down. He almost didn't see the old lady, but in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. He pulled up in front of her car and got out.
Even with a smile on his face, she was worried. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look safe; he looked poor and hungry. Joe knew how she felt and said to her, ”I'm here to help you, m'am. Why don't you wait in the car where it's warm.” She had a flat tire and Joe set about replacing it immediately. All this put the woman at ease. She then rolled down her window and began to talk to him, telling him that she was from St. Louis and was only passing through. Then the thankful woman asked Joe how much she owed him. But Joe told her that he had been given a hand in the past and if she wished to pay him back, she could give the money to someone who needed her help next time.
A few miles down the road the lady went into a small café. A waitress brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. The waitress was nearly eight months pregnant, but she never let the strain and aches change her attitude. The old lady wondered how someone who had so little could be so giving to a stranger. When the waitress came back to give the lady her change from a hundred dollar bill, she found a message on a napkin: “Take this. Someone once helped me out the way I'm helping you now. If you really want to pay me back, here's what you can do. Don't let the chain of love end with you.
That night when she got home from work and climbed into bed, the waitress was thinking about what the lady had written. How could the lady have known that she and her husband needed the money? With the baby due next month, it was going to be hard. Knowing how worried her husband was, she whispered soft and low to him, “Everything's gonna be alright, I love you, Joe.”

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

Becket not only traveled light, he also lived light. In all the world he owned just the clothes he stood up in, a full suitcase and a bank account. Arriving anywhere with these possessions, he might just as easily put up for a month or a year as for a single night. For long stays not less than a month, he might take a furnished flat, sometimes even a house. But whatever the case was, he rarely needed anything he did not have with him.

Becket had one occasional anxiety; he suspected that he owned more than would fit comfortably into the suitcase. Having no use for choice or variety, he kept just a raincoat, a suit, a pair of shoes, a few shirts and some socks; no more in the clothing line. He bought and read many books and left them wherever he happened to be sitting when he finished them.
Becket was a professional traveler, interested and interesting. He was not the type to "do" a country in a week or a city in three days. He liked to get the feel of a place by living in it, reading its newspapers, watching its TV and discussing its affairs. He always tried to make a few friends-if necessary even by stopping a suitable-looking person in the street and talking to him. It worked well in about one case out of ten. Though Becket's health gave him no cause for alarm, he made a point of seeing a doctor as soon as he arrived anywhere. "A doctor knows a place and its people better than anyone, " he used to say.
Becket was an artist as well. He painted pictures of the places he visited and , when he had gathered enough information, he wrote about them. He sold his works to newspapers and magazines. It was an agreeable sort of life for a good social mixer, and as Becket never stayed anywhere for long, he enjoyed the satisfying advantage of paying very little in taxes.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

People in cities all over the world shop in supermarkets. Who decides what you buy in the supermarkets? Do you decide? Does the supermarket decide? When you enter the supermarket, you see shelves full of food. You walk in the aisles(过道)between the shelves. You push a shopping cart and put your food in it. You probably hear slow music as you walk along the aisles; if you hear fast music, you walk quickly. The supermarket plays slow music. You walk slowly and have more time to buy things.
Where do you go in the supermarket when you first arrive? Maybe you go to the meat department first. There is some meat on sale, and you want to find it. The manager of the supermarket knows where customers enter the meat department. The cheaper meat is at the end of the meat department, away from where the customers enter. You have to walk by all the expensive meat before you find the cheaper meat. Maybe you will buy some of the expensive meat instead of the meat on sale.
The dairy(乳制品)department sells milk and milk products such as butter and cheese. Many customers like milk that has only a little butterfat in it. One store has three different containers of low fat milk. One says "1 percent (1%)" fat on the container. The second says "99 percent (99%) far free". The third says "Low Fat" in big letters and "1%" in small letters. As you can see, all the milk has the same amount of fat. The milk is all the same. The amount of milk in each container is also the same. However, in this store the three containers of milk don't cost the same. Maybe the customer will buy the milk that costs the most.
Most of the food in supermarkets is very attractive. People often stop to look at the products in attractive containers. But remember, many products will say, "Buy me!". Stop and think which ones are the best value for your money.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

I remember my father John Gary Lewis when he was about the age of 50. Even then, he could work harder than men half his age. It is true that he never smoked or went to movies or parties, but what mattered more is that he believed in working. Even if he was coming down with a cold, he would buy a bag of oranges and sit down and eat nearly the whole bag, instead of going to a doctor.
My father was old fashioned in every way: farming, parenting and home care when you were sick. He did his plowing behind mules(骡子) because he thought tractors(拖拉机) would damage the roots of the plants. He was a college professor in North Carolina for 30 years, full-time, and when he wasn't doing that, he was out on his farm, working, sunup to sundown, never taking a vacation, day in and day out, year after year.
My four brothers and I grew up in Raleigh in a tough family, guided by the principle that physical strength and endurance are key to survival. I still think of my father at 50 laboring in the hot burning sun, outworking my brothers and me. A long time afterward, when I turned 50, I became a boxer and fought four or five rounds with young kids, three-minute rounds, and I found it quite easy to beat them.
The trouble with most of us is that we start to surrender inside once we get between 50 and 60. Our values and interests start to change, and it no longer matters so much who's the winner, especially since we know it's unlikely to be us. In reality, you can still be a winner when you are old; winning truly means being the best of what you are, doing the best you can do, regardless of what anybody else says.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选项中选择一个最佳答案。

I think it is true that parents often underestimate their teenage children and tend to forget how they themselves felt when young. And it is natural for young people to be critical of their parents at times and to blame them for most of the misunderstandings between their parents and themselves. They are always complaining, more or less justly, that their parents are out of touch with modern ways of life; that they are possessive and dominant; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems; and that they have no sense of humour, at least in parent-child relationships.
Young people often irritate their parents with their choices in clothes and hairstyles and music, yet this is not their motive. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or vocabulary or clothes or hairstyles irritate their parents, they will only get additional enjoyment. They feel that they are superior, at least in a small way, and that they are leaders in style and taste.
Sometimes they are rebellious(叛逆的)and proud because they do not want their parents to approve of what they do. If their parents do approve, they feel they are betraying their own age group. But in that case, they are assuming that they are the loser: they can't win but at least they can keep their honour. This is a passive way of looking at things. It is natural enough after long years of childhood when they are completely under their parents' control. But they ignore the fact that they are now beginning to be responsible for themselves.
If they plan to control their life, co-operation can be part of their plan. They can charm others, especially their parents into doing things the way they want. They can impress others with their sense of responsibility and initiative, so that their parents will give them the authority to do what they want to do.

Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选项中选择一个最佳答案。

I will never forget what my old headmaster had taught me. Normally when you are only 15 years of age you do not remember most of the things that are preached by your teachers. But, this particular story is one such lesson that I will never forget. Every time I drift off course, I get reminded of this story.
It was a normal Monday morning at an assembly, and he was addressing the students on important things in life and about committing ourselves to what was important to us. This is how the story went:
An old man lived in a certain part of London, and he would wake up every morning and go to the subway. He would take the train right to Central London, and then sit at the street corner and beg. He did this every single day for almost 20 years.
His house was filthy, and a horrible smell came out of it. The neighbors could not stand the smell any longer, so they summoned the police officers to clear the place. The officers knocked down the door, cleaned the house and found small bags of money all over the house. When they counted the money, they realized that the old man was a millionaire.
They waited outside his house in anticipation to share the good news with him. When he arrived home that evening, the old man was met by one of the officers who told him that there was no need for him to beg any more as he was now a millionaire.
The old man said nothing at all. He went into his house and locked the door. The next morning he woke up as usual, went to the subway, got into the train, and sat at the street corner and continued to beg. Obviously, this old man had no great plans, dreams or anything significant for his life. We learn nothing from this story other than staying focused on the things we enjoy doing.
We should remain true to our course, which may mean committing ourselves to things that people around us would normally disapprove. Let nothing distract us from being happy; let nothing else determine our fate, but ourselves. What makes us happy is what matters in the end, not what we acquire.

The Getty Center
① The Getty Center attracts 1.1 million visitors a year. It is one of the most popular art museums in the US. One reason for its popularity may be that the Getty is free. No tickets to buy, and no reservations needed. There is a $15 parking fee, but you do not have to pay for parking after 5 p. m. And there is convenient public transportation.
② A tram (接驳车) carries you from the parking area up to the hilltop campus. When you step out,you come face to face with views of the Pacific Ocean, the Santa Monica Mountains, and the vast open area of Los Angeles.
③ Then you will see the five main buildings that house the museum’s collection surrounding a central courtyard. The buildings are connected by glassed walkways. So you can enjoy the view again while you move from one building to another. One of the outstanding characteristics of the museum is the natural light that shines through each building’s computer-controlled louvers (百叶 窗). It allows viewers to look at paintings in the same natural light in which they were created.
④ Part of the large campus is used for a series of gardens. The Central Garden was designed by Robert Irwin. He himself built everything from the handrails (扶手) to the waterfall to create a special and artistic experience in nature.
⑤ The Getty Center makes an effort to satisfy visitors. There is a café that offers lunches and snacks. There is also a restaurant for more formal meals, but it usually requires reservations. The museum includes a family room that lets kids create artwork and offers educational programs for everyone.

阅读下面短文,请完成短文后的2项测试任务:(1)从第1~ 5题后所给的6个选项中为每段选择1个正确的小标题;(2)从第6~10题后所给的6个选项中选择5个正确选项,分别完成每个句子。

①Intelligence was believed to be fixed entity, some faculty of the mind that we all possess and which determines in some way the extent of our achievements. Its value therefore, was as a predictor of children's future learning. If they differed markedly in their ability to learn complex tasks, then it was clearly necessary to educate them differently and the need for different types of school and even different ability groups within school was obvious. Intelligence tests could be used for streaming children according to ability at an early age; and at 11 these tests were superior to measures of attainment for selecting children for different types of secondary education.
②Today, we are beginning to think differently. In the last few years, research has thrown doubt on the view that innate intelligence can ever be measured and on the very nature of intelligence itself. There is considerable evidence now which shows the great influence of environment both on achievement and intelligence. Children with poor home backgrounds not only do less well in their school work and intelligence tests but their performance tends to deteriorate gradually compared with that of their more fortunate classmates.
③There are evidences that support the view that we have to distinguish between genetic intelligence and observed intelligence. Any deficiency in the appropriate genes will restrict development no matter how stimulating the environment. We cannot observe and measure innate intelligence, whereas we can observe and measure the effects of the interaction of whatever is inherited with whatever stimulation has been received from the environment. Researches have been investigating what happens in this interaction.
④Two major findings have emerged from these researches. Firstly, the greater part of the development of observed intelligence occurs in the earliest years of life. It is estimated that 50 percent of measurable intelligence at age 17 is already predictable by the age of 4. Secondly, the most important factors in the environment are language and psychological aspects of the parent-child relationship. Much of the difference in measured intelligence between " privileged" and " disadvantaged" children may be due to the latter's lack of appropriate verbal stimulation and the poverty of their perceptual experiences.
⑤These research findings have led to a revision in our understanding of the nature of intelligence. Instead of it being some largely inherited fixed power of the mind, we now see it as a set of developed skills with which a person copes with any environment. These skills have to be learned and, indeed, one of them is learning how to learn.

Summer Blues
① We students all have summer blues. It's that moment when we haven't left the house for days and the Internet has become our closest friend. This usually takes place in the heat of summer, when we forget there's a world outside of our rooms. It's usually our darkest hours, which is difficult to get out of, but not impossible.
② Getting a summer job can help provide structure for your life. Without school schedule, it's difficult to try to get out of bed. In fact, we've been training ourselves for most of summer to sleep in until noon. But if you commit yourself to a job, then it can act as a reason to get up in the morning.
③ Another way to avoid the summer blues is by living a healthier lifestyle. Join a gym. Start shopping at your local market. Keep your room clean. Or maybe pick up a new hobby and become a master at it. A little change in your life can have a significant effect in the long run.
④ The best way to avoid getting in a bad state is by packing your summer full of camps. With a new adventure waiting around the comer every week, how will an individual not want to wake up? You can attend two or three camps every year. You will find that you've met some of your closest friends from summer camps.

⑤ Sometimes, however, people do not realize they have suffered from the summer blues. They stay locked inside their houses for hours. If you know people like this, then call them up. Take them out for dinner. Catch a movie with them. Do not let your friends come down with a strong case of the summer blues.

The People of the Rain Forests

①There are two groups of people who live in the rain forests of Africa—Bantu villagers and Pygmy hunters. The two groups have very different ways of life. But they have learned to survive in the rain forest by depending on each other.
②The Pygmies live as hunters in the rain forest. They live in large groups of families and hunt with nets. The men go to an area where they know there are animals. They hold up nets and the women and children spread out and drive the animals into the nets.

③Hunting is a full-time job for the Pygmies,so they cannot always stay in villages. But over the years, the Pygmies have learned to enjoy some of the luxuries (奢侈品)of village life. Their forest foods of meat, fruity and nuts are enough for them. But they also enjoy some village foods—like rice, beans, peanuts and vegetables. They also need some metal tools that are made by the villagers.

④The villagers are Bantus. They stay in the clearings(空地)in the rain forests. The Bantus cannot keep cattle in the rain forest. There is not enough room for the cattle to feed. So the Bantus are given meat by the Pygmies. To the Bantus the rain forest is a dangerous place. But to the Pygmies it is familiar. So the Pygmies fetch firewood and guard the village fields from wild animals.

⑤The Bantus must work very hard to clear their fields. Once they are cleared, the villagers must fight continually to keep the rain forest from taking over again. The soil of the rain forest is so poor that the farm crops soon wear it out. Then the villagers must give the land back to the forest after a few years' farming and clear more.

How to be Polite
Respecting the emotions and feelings of people interacting with you through your considerate behaviour is a form of politeness. It is considered as an essential soft skill that can open new doors for you. Here are some qualities you can learn.
① If you are looking for ways to be polite you need to use appropriate language while interacting with others. Do not think that only the people who are social, financially or professionally superior to you deserve your politeness.

② Gossip is a form of negative inputs that can disturb the existing atmosphere. Both personal life and professional work-front are hubs of gossip and it is human nature to listen attentively and then offer opinions. If you are looking for ways to be polite then you need to stay away from gossip. Telling tales or even just listening to them makes you a party to it.

③ Do not appoint yourself as judge and jury because you are unaware of the circumstances that other people are going through. It is quite easy to make snap judgements without acquiring all the facts and information.

④ Humour is a very powerful weapon and must be used fittingly. It can cause serious harm if applied at the wrong time and during inappropriate situations. If you are looking for ways to be polite then recognise your boundaries. Remember that there is a place and time for humour. Try not to cause offence by your humour as the things you find humorous might not seem like it to others.

⑤ A person who is polite will put others at ease in a gentle and calm manner. They do not believe in ruffling any feathers and will diffuse tense situations with a firm and appropriate hand. They will go out of their way to alleviate any discomfort or uncomfortable moment. If you are looking for ways to be polite then let the other person speak about himself.
