Reading Comprehension
从下列每篇短文的问题后所给的四个选择项中选出一个最佳答案。

The amount of time kids spend online is a source of frustration for many parents. Initially, parents welcomed the Internet into their homes, believing they were opening up an exciting new world of educational opportunities for their children. However, many parents soon realized that, instead of using the Internet for homework or research, their kids were spending hours exchanging messages with friends, playing online games or talking to strangers in chat rooms.
Maintaining a healthy balance between entertainment media and other activities in their children's lives has always been a challenge for parents. The Internet has made this challenge even more difficult. The engaging nature of Internet communications and interactive games means many children and teens have trouble keeping track of time when they're online.
Unfortunately, parents and teachers are usually not aware that there is a problem until it becomes serious. This is because it is easy to hide what you are doing online and because Internet addiction is not widely recognized by the medical community. And mental health practitioners continue to debate whether this behavior is an ”addiction,” with some identifying it as “compulsive behavior.”
Children and young people can easily become hooked on online activities such as multi-user games, instant messaging and chat rooms. The most vulnerable children, according to the Computer-Addiction Services at Harvard Medical School, are those who are ”lonely and bored or from families where nobody is at home to relate to after school.”
Children who are unpopular or shy with peers are often attracted to the opportunities for creating new identities in online communities. Boys, in particular, are frequent users of online role-playing games, where they assume new identities and interact with other players. Although playing these games with other users may appear to be social activity, for the introverted(内向的) child or teen, excessive playing can further isolate them from friends and peers.

On November 19, 1863, Abraham Lincoln went to Gettysburg in Pennsylvania to speak at the National Soldiers Cemetery. The Civil War was still going on. There was much criticism of President Lincoln at the time. He was not at all popular. He had been invited to speak at Gettysburg only out of courtesy. The principal speaker was to be Edward Everett, a famous statesman and speaker of the day. Everett was a handsome man and very popular everywhere.
It is said that Lincoln prepared his speech on the train while going to Gettysburg. Late that night, alone in his hotel room and tired out, he again worked briefly on the speech. The next day Everett spoke first. He spoke for an hour and 57 minutes. His speech was a perfect example of the rich oratory of the day. Then Lincoln rose. The crowd of 15,000 people at first paid little attention to him. He spoke for only nine minutes. At the end there was little applause. Lincoln turned to a friend and remarked, “I have failed again.” On the train back to Washington he commented sadly, “That speech was a flat failure, and the people are disappointed.”
Some newspapers at first criticized the speech. But little by little, as people read the speech, they began to understand better. They began to appreciate its simplicity and its deep meaning. It was a speech which only Abraham Lincoln could have made.
Today, every American school child learns Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address by heart. Now everyone thinks of it as one of the greatest orations ever given in American history.

Spilt(打翻的)Milk
I recently heard a story about a famous scientist who had made several very important medical achievements. He was asked why he was so much more creative than the average person.
He responded that it all came from an experience when he was about two. He had been trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip(紧握) and it fell, spilling(打翻) the milk all over the floor.
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of yelling at him, or punishing him, she said, “Robert, what a wonderful mess you have made! Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge(海绵) or a towel. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilt milk.
His mother then said, “You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it.
The scientist remarked that it was then that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment “doesn’t work,” we usually learn something valuable from it.

The Kilt
Whenever people from Scotland live in foreign countries, they are always asked:”Is Scotland that place where men wear skirts?" The short answer is yes, but there is more about the myths of Scottish”skirts".
The"skirt" that Scotsmen(苏格兰男子) sometimes wear is called a kilt. It is part of the traditional dress of Scotland. The kilt is clearly very famous across the world. It seems that everybody has heard of it, and that most people have seen a picture of a man wearing one.
People's knowledge and ideas about Scotsmen wearing these funny kilts come from films and television. Every time people from other countries ask about the kilt, they mention Mel Gibson's film, Braveheart. In many countries, there are television programmes about Scotland. These programmes always include information or images of men in kilts.
Of course, in Scotland, you will often see the kilt. The reality is, though, that you will most commonly see it in tourist areas. The main streets and tourist areas of Scotland always have a Scotsman wearing a kilt and all tourist shops in the country sell kilts in different colours.
But kilts are not something that Scottish people see every day. Kilts are for special occasions, such as weddings, funerals and other big and important events. Scotsmen do not put on their kilt just to buy a bottle of milk and a loaf of bread at the local supermarket.
The reason for this may be that kilts are very expensive. When a man wears a kilt, he normally wears it with a special shirt, jacket, socks and shoes. This is obviously not cheap. In fact, an average kilt outfit(全套服装) costs around £500.

It is estimated that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants as we know have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. There was nowhere in which a server brought you food and drink that you chose from a menu. In fact, there was no menus anywhere.
There were places where travelers could eat centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. And there were bars where one could get a drink. The rich could also eat meals supplied by private cooks. But there was nothing that could be called a "restaurant".
A Frenchman changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups. On his sign, he used the term "restaurant" to describe what he was selling. Soups were considered "restorative", so he called them "restaurants". Finally, people started buying his soups even when not ill. And as time went on, people began to use the term "restaurant" to refer to the place where soup was sold rather than the soup itself. More "restaurants" opened up in France, and people began to buy soups more regularly.
Then, restaurants in Paris began to serve food other than soups. In the 1780s, menus started to appear. By the 1800s, there were many types of restaurants, and the restaurant concept was spread throughout the British Empire.
A slow start gave way to rapid growth. Cities and towns around the world are filled with restaurants today. It is estimated that there are 1.6 million restaurants in Europe. In America, there are nearly a half million restaurants.

Skyscrapers and Environment
In the late 1960’s, many people in North America turned their attention to environmental problems, and new steel-and-glass skyscrapers were widely criticized. Ecologists pointed out that a cluster of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lot capacities.
Skyscrapers are also lavish consumers, and wasters, of electric power. In one recent year, the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New York City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120,000 kilowatts — enough to supply the entire city of Albany, New York, for a day.
Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss(or gain) through a wall of half-inch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical masonry wall(砌筑墙) filled with insulation board(隔热板). To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment, builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glazed panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare as well as heat gain. However, mirror-walled skyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.
Skyscrapers put a severe strain on a city’s sanitation facilities, too. If fully occupied, the two World Trade Center towers in New York City would alone generate 2.25 million gallons of raw sewage each year — as much as a city the size of Stanford, Connecticut, which has a population of more than 109,000.

Living in Brazil (巴西)and Switzerland
Moving to a different city may seem difficult. You have to change schools and get used to your new home. But you can always go back to that city to visit. When you move to another country, things are different. However, difficult as it may be, the experience can be rewarding.
My dad, a Brazilian, is really funny and can make friends quickly. My mom, a Swiss, is usually quiet and a bit shy. She likes to be organized, but my dad never makes plans. She enjoys staying home, but my dad always wants to go out. Swiss and Brazilian---what a mix!
After my parents got married, they moved to Switzerland. There they had my brother and me. When I was two, we moved to Brazil. During my childhood we visited Switzerland every year.
Many people ask me where I prefer to live: Brazil or Switzerland. It’s really hard to answer because I love both countries. Brazil is a big country with many states and people. There are multiple dialects and many types of foods. People here have beautiful smiles and are always happy, even if they are poor. In the south the climate is cool, but in the north it’s hot and humid.
Switzerland, on the other hand, is small but beautiful and clean. There are four languages in that tiny country. People there are very different from Brazilians: they are wealthy, independent, and organized. The food is delicious, and of course, the famous Swiss chocolate is great, and the climate is dry and cool.
I love both countries. In Switzerland, it's pleasant, calm, and peaceful everywhere. I enjoyed my stay there very much. But now I am happy here in Brazil, I feel excited and at home.

Today's video game worlds in the U.S.A. are so detailed that they give the player a realistic and rewarding experience. It is not just children that play these games; it is also common for men from 18 to 30 have at home some sort of game console(控制器).
People think this may affect real-life behavior and ask ‘are life-like computer games a good thing?’, especially the first-person games where the player takes on active roles like shooting at others in armed battles.
As modern characters in computer games have become more people-like than cartoon-like, as the language becomes more informal or casual, and as the sound effects become more realistic, many kinds of concern have been raised about the link between computer games and the children's aggressive behavior. Worried parents have welcomed the computer game classification, which is similar to film ratings. This makes it easier for parents to monitor what their children are playing with.
Are computer games making us more aggressive? There is no evidence that proves a link between an increase in computer game violence and aggressive or violent behavior in children, but the question still arises: is it acceptable for computer games to depict life-like scenes of violence?
What lessons do players take from games like Grand Theft Auto where players speed through city streets trying to reach their destination in the quickest time regardless of people walking along the streets in their way or Hooligans: Storms over Europe where men run violently into football fields, fight competitors and attack police. Do you think these computer games make it difficult to tell right from wrong and fact from fiction?

It is difficult to estimate the number of youngsters involved in home schooling, where children are not sent to school and receive their formal education from one or both parents. Legislation and court decisions have make it legally possible in most states for parents to educate their children at home, and each year more people take advantage of that opportunity.
Supporters of home education claim that it is less expensive and far more efficient than mass public education. Moreover they quote several merits: relief of school overcrowding, added curricular and pedagogical (课程和教学法) alternatives, strengthened family relationships, lower dropout rates, increased motivation, higher standardized test scores, and reduced discipline problems. Supporters of home schooling also believe that it provides the parents with the opportunity to reinforce their moral values through education.
Critics of home schooling movement claim that it creates as many problems as it solves. They acknowledge that, in a few cases, home schooling offers educational opportunities superior to those found in most public schools, but few parents can provide such educational advantages. Some parents who withdraw their children form the schools in favor of home schooling have an inadequate educational background and insufficient formal training to provide a satisfactory education for their children. Typically, parents have fewer, not more technological resources available than do schools. However, the relatively inexpensive computer technology that is readily available today is causing some challenge to the notion that home schooling is in any way not so good as more highly structured classroom education.

Finally, a sociological (社会学) concern is the restricted social interaction experienced by children who are educated at home. Technology will never replace the pupil-teacher relationship. Also, while relationships with parents and brothers and sisters may be improved, children taught at home may develop a distorted (歪曲的) view of society.

 Urban Gardening

Urban gardening refers to the practice of planting a garden in the city. Apartments, town homes, and other areas with little or no land are being used for gardening. This method of gardening is becoming more common as the amount of land for gardening in cities is becoming smaller and smaller.

Containers, hanging baskets and raised beds are examples of items people use to create a garden in a confined space. Some cities also offer a shared community garden for people who have no room to grow plants at home.
Many types of plants can be grown in containers and baskets. Tomatoes and peppers, for instance, can grow in containers on windowsills (窗台). Plants grown on a windowsill should usually receive at least six to eight hours of sunlight daily. Herbs are often grown in containers or baskets in the kitchen. They do not require much space and can be handy for cooking.
People who want to grow more plants may use raised beds which are usually made of wood pieces and filled with a mixture of soil and fertilizers. They can be built on top of any hard surface, including roof tops. People like them because the beds often cost much less than most other methods of gardening.
Community gardening could be an option for anyone who does not have space for a garden at home. Most cities that offer this will rent a small plot of land to someone for a fee, or allow them to use it free of charge. Instead of dividing the land into separate plots, some cities allow everyone in the neighborhood to share and work on the same land. This method could be beneficial for people in the neighborhood who share the passion for growing things.

Mental Illness Hits Small Business Owners Hard
While there is a growing focus on mental health in the workplace, there are fewer resources and support available to those running small businesses.
There are many reasons people choose to have their own business: being their own boss, working on something they love, being able to set their own hours, or having some control over whom they work with. Yet the reality many small business owners face is far less attractive—financial stress, long working hours and unclear boundaries between work and family life. And all of these factors can have a huge impact on their mental health.
Leanne Fawkner is a business owner of an award-winning skin-care range (系列产品). She knows very well the impact that a small business can have on the mental health of its owner. When her successful business struggled due to the global financial crisis, she suffered a lot mentally. "As business slowed, I was more and more affected," she says. "I couldn't separate myself from my business. It was the worst experience of my life. I could no longer go to work and was crying all day."
Fawkner was diagnosed with depression. She had to take several months off work. Fortunately, her husband was able to keep things going while Fawkner was recovering. She saw a counselor (咨询师) for help and took part in workplace mental health promotion program. This program was designed for small to medium business owners.
"The stories on the DVD in the program were so helpful. I was crying because I didn't feel so alone." For Fawkner, small business owners are overlooked. While employees in larger organizations often have access to employee assistance programs, small business owners are struggling on their own.

A straight-A student got a C in cooking class and didn’t like it. She didn’t like it so much that her dad filed a complaint in federal court about it. He insists that the teacher, who is white, discriminated against his daughter, who is black. He seeks to have her grade changed from a C to an A and asks for unspecified financial damages.
Virginia Brown is in the ninth grade at Ashley High School. Since her first year in school, she has had perfect attendance and all her grades have been A’ s. Virginia’s father said her heart was broken when she got the C.
“She cried the whole weekend,” he said. “She wouldn’t come out of her room. Her eyes were red and puffy(肿). My little girl hasn’t been this upset since her cat got run over by a car when she was 6 years old.”
Virginia is a model student. She’s the class president. She’s on the swim team, the volleyball team, and the track team. She belongs to the chess club. She is a member of the Girl Scouts and sings in her church choir.
The home economics teacher is 28-year-old Jessica Smith. This is her first year teaching. Ms. Smith said that discrimination was absolutely not the issue. “Some of my best friends are African Americans,” she said. “This isn’t a black and white problem. Everybody in America wants to sue(起诉)everybody else. I’m going to sue them for defamation(毁坏名誉) of character and whatever else my lawyer comes up with.“
The school principal, who grew up in India, said that he supported Ms. Smith 100 percent. He said that Virginia is an excellent student who would have no problem getting into the best universities even with a C in cooking. “She won’t have any difficulty finding a great university, but she might have problems finding a husband,” he laughed. “She’d better look for man who likes to eat out a lot.”

Universal Gestures
Gestures for victory, defeat and stress are almost the same in all countries.
On the front page of a newspaper we often see the picture of people holding their head in shock. People put their hands on their head or over their mouth when they look on a scene with shock or horror.
Chris Ulrich is an expert on body language. He said that covering your mouth or putting your hands on your head helps make you feel safer from a perceived threat. By covering part of your face you can feel hidden from the shocking event. Additionally these reactions can help a person comfort himself through touch. Ulrich said it is a self comforting gesture to help people in the moment.
In times of strong anxiety, people will twist their hands to calm themselves. Ulrich said it is a reaction people often have when they are in front of an audience or nervous. "It's a comfort for them that they'll get through it," said Ulrich. He relates that gesture to a parent trying to calm a child.
Most athletes react to victories or defeats with specific behaviors. A 2008 study examined pictures of judo(柔道)competitors during the 2008 Olympic Games. They were from different countries, but they showed similar behaviors when they won a match. The winners would throw their head back or raise their hands in triumph. Ulrich said these victory behaviors are a way winners "explode" out and take up more space.
However, if an athlete suffers a loss, he will act in a way that makes him physically smaller, such as hanging his head. "When you lose, you want to disappear," said Ulrich. The study also found that the judo competitors had the same behavior when they lost.

What Happens When You Stop Exercising
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you stopped exercising? A new study on twins was published in the journal Medicine & Science. The results of the study are dramatic.
In the study, researchers looked at 10 pairs of twin men. Each set of twins was in their mid-30s. Each had been brought up in the same family. Since they were identical, they shared the same DNA. They had maintained the same level of physical activity for most of their lives. But there was one difference. One twin of each set had cut on exercising in the past few years due to work or family pressure. On average, the less active twin exercised less than twice a week, while the active twin exercised at least twice a week. The research team put each twin through a set of medical tests to study their overall health.
The results showed big differences. While the more active twins had lower body fat percentage, better endurance level, and normal sensitivity, the inactive twins had about seven more pounds of body fat, worse endurance, and signs of disease. Not only were their bodies different; their brains were different as well. The active twins had more gray matter (the information processing part of the brain), particularly in areas that control balance.
The conclusion of the study is clear. Quitting your fitness routine can bring negative effects to your body and your brain as well. Considering the less active twins in the study had become couch potatoes (沉溺于看电视的人) only recently, these changes can sneak up on you a lot sooner than you'd think. So keep exercising. It is beneficial to your overall health!

Kindness of Strangers
At the store where I worked, I noticed a young boy of about ten shopping alone with his school list. He placed everything in his basket and went to the checkout.
The young shop assistant told him the total price, $37.60. The boy was instantly disappointed and said he had only been given $20. He took out one thing at a time until he got down to his $20. With eyes full of tears, he asked if he could phone his mum to pick him up. When he got through, it appeared that even this was inconvenient for his mother.
He bit hard on his lip to stop the tears and walked outside to wait on the bench in front of the shop. This was all too much for the young assistant who had served him and she said , “I wish I could afford to pay for the rest of his things .” One of the other girls said she had a few dollars. Then two others said they could help as well.
These four young girls pooled their money and found that they had more than enough money for the boy's extra purchases. So they upgraded his pens and pencils to top-quality ones, then took the bag out to the boy on the seat. His young face changed from sadness to the most beautiful smile. His mother arrived much later to pick him up. Instead of running to the car, he ran back into the store and called out, “Thank you!”
I was so proud of my team that day. They did something wonderful for that boy and also found the pleasure of giving was as great as receiving.

Water: How Much Should You Drink Each Day?
How much water should you drink each day? It's a simple question with no easy answers. Studies have produced different recommendations over the years. Although no single formula(配方) fits everyone, knowing more about your body's need for fluids will help you estimate how much water to drink each day.
Water is your body's main chemical element. It makes up about 60 percent of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water. For example, water carries nutrients(营养成份) to your cells, and provides a good environment for ear, nose and throat. Lack of water can lead to serious problems.
Every day you lose water. For your body to work properly, you must meet its water needs. So how much fluid does the average, healthy adult living in a moderate climate need? Studies show an adequate intake(摄入) for men is about 13 cups a day. For women, it is about nine cups.
Everyone has heard the advice, “Drink eight glasses of water a day.” This rule isn’t supported by hard evidence. However, it remains popular because it's easy to remember. Just keep in mind that the rule should be changed to: “Drink eight glasses of fluid a day,” because all fluids add up to the daily total.
You don't need to rely only on what you drink to meet your fluid needs. What you eat also provides fluid. On average, food provides about 20 percent of total water intake. But water is still your best choice since it is inexpensive and is everywhere.

Sef-esteem(自尊) and Body Image
Self-esteem is all about what people think themselves. It is important because feeling good about yourself can affect how you act.Pope who have high self-esteem will make friends easily. They are more in control of their behavior, and will enjoy life more.
Some teenagers struggle with their esteem when they grow into adults because the body goes through many changes.Along with the changes comes a natural desire to feel accepted. What's more, they can't help but compare themselves with others. They may compare themselves with the people around them or with actors and other famous people they see on TV, in movies, or in magazines.
The physical changes can affect how both girls and boys feel about themselves. Some girls may feel uncomfortable about their growing bodies.Others may wish that they were developing faster.Girls may feel like being thin but boys may feel like they don't look big enough.
It's not just body development that affects self-esteem.Many other factors can affect a person's body image too.Family life, for example, can sometimes influence self-esteem. Some parents spend more time criticizing their kids and the way they look than praising them.
This can reduce kids' ability to develop good self-esteem.Also their classmates and peers may tease them about the way they look. These sometimes can affect their self-esteem.
If there are things about yourself that you want to change and you can change,do this by making goals for yourself. If there are things that you can't change, recognize that your body is your own. It's no one's business but your own what your body is like. Actually,to be happy with yourself, all you need to do is to change the way you see your body.

Helping Children Cope with Stress

① To adults, childhood can seem to be happy and free from worries. But children still experience stress.Things like school and their social life can sometimes create pressures that are too difficult for them to deal with. While they may not talk about their troubles, they do want their parents to reach out and help them.

② Children deal with stress in both healthy and unhealthy ways.As a parent, you can't protect your children from stress, but you can help them develop healthy ways to cope with stress and solve everyday problems. By doing so,you not only help your children handle their current stresses, but also prepare them to deal with future stresses. Here are a few tips for you.

③ When you nice that something is upsetting your child, you need to tell your child about it. If you can, name the feeling you think your child is experiencing. This shouldn't sound like blame. It is just a casual observation, and you’re interested in hearing more about your child's concern. Be sympathetic and show that you care and want to understand.
④ Also ask your children to tell you what’s wrong. Listen attentively and calmly--with interest, patience, openness, and caring. Don't hurry to make judgments. Do not blame or criticize your child for what he or she has done. The idea is to listen to your child's concerns and feelings. Try to get the whole story by patiently asking questions. Take your time. And let your child take his or her time, too.
⑤ Remember to be patient. As a parent,it hurts to see your child unhappy or stressed. But
you should not try to solve every problem for your child.Instead, try to help your child grow into a good problem-solver-a child who knows how to deal with life's ups and downs, express feelings in words, calm down when needed, and never give in to difficulties.

Those Who Ride on Two Wheels
In the United States there are six million tennis players and twelve million golfers. These figures would not surprise most people. But many would be surprised to learn that twenty million Americans ride motorcycles(摩托车), few people realize that motorcycling is fast becoming one of America's most popular sports.
According to the Cycle News, many kinds of people enjoy motorcycling. They include black people and white people, businessmen, professionals, and blue-collar workers. Among them, about 55% are businessmen, 3% are in the professions and 9% in government service.
Such information is offered by the Cycle News in the hope of improving the general public's impression of the sport. The public has tended to believe that all motorcyclists are wild and lawless young men.
There are several things about motorcycling that the average citizen dislikes and motorcyclist's appearance has something to do with this dislike. Motorcyclists often look dirty; in fact, they are dirty. On the road, there is little to protect them from mud. For practical reasons, they often dress in old clothing which looks much less respectable than the clothing of people who ride in cars. For the same reason, motorcyclists usually wear dark colors. Perhaps this helps to explain why they are sometimes suspected of having bad natures.
Probably motorcycles themselves also produce anger and fear. They are noisy, though some trucks are even noisier. But trucks are acceptable because they perform a needed service. Motorcycles, on the other hand, make an uncomfortable noise just to give their riders pleasure. Roaring along quiet streets, they wake sleeping families and make babies cry.
Yet, as motorcycling becomes more and more common, it will be interesting to see how people in general feel about the sport. Perhaps it will someday become as "respectable" as tennis or golf.
