Adjectives can be classified in terms of three scales: stative/dynamic, gradable/non-gradable, and inherent/non-inherent. The majority of adjectives are stative in nature, describing permanent inherent qualities, which is particularly so when they are used attributively: a big house, a tall man. Adjectives that can be used dynamically include: ambitious, calm, faithful, reasonable etc. Most adjectives can take comparative forms, inflectional or periphrastic, or they can be modified by intensifiers like very and so graded on a scale of intensity: big, bigger, biggest. Adjectives which exclusively with an absolute meaning (e.g. perfect) are non-gradable. Adjectives denoting inherent qualities characterize the referent of the noun. A big house refers to a house whose size is big. By contrast, non-inherent adjectives indentify qualities in an indirect way. A big eater, for example, does not refer to the size of the eater.
