Joan has sweaty palms when she enters her math class. Her heart beats faster and faster as she moves toward her seat She remembers that she is getting back her chapter test paper today, and she knows she did not do as well as she should have. She studied hard for a week before the test, but her mind went blank on some of the questions. She remembers feeling the same way in elementary school in Mrs. Smith’s class. Mrs. Smith always told her, “You’re not trying hard enough. That’s what your problem is.” Joan looks at other students sitting calmly in their seats. She feels helpless and wonders why. What Joan does not know is that she is suffering from the symptoms of math anxiety.
