Read the Chairman's Statement below and answer questions.
Are sentences "Right" or "Wrong"? If there is not enough information to answer "Right" or "Wrong", choose "Doesn't Say".

Chairman's Statement
Last year saw both the continued development of trends within the industry and some unexpected results. The domestic British market saw further steady growth but could be overtaken by US sales next year. As in 1997, sales in the USA rose sharply with the successful release of three new computer games. However, hopes of the European market showing the same rate of growth were affected by a strong pound.

Computer games incresed their domination of sales in 1998 with the football game The Golden Boot: France 98 selling over 100,000 units in World Cup year. Other sports titles are now amongst the company's top brands.

The company also enjoyed a sharp rise in sales of educational products. Our new range of interactive multimedia products Schoolware launched in late 1997, is now a top-selling brand. Further Schoolware titles to be launched this year should ensure continued growth in this market.

Sales figures for 1998 show very clearly the changing face of the company's activities. Millennium Software is now a producer of entertainment and educational products. In order to adapt to these markets, the company will have to expand by increasing its product range and reducing its development times.

Moreover, the company faces new challenges in distribution. Large retail chains with pan-European buying power are becoming increasingly dominant in the distribution of computer software. These superstores now offer competitive prices and a narrow product range based on top-selling titles. With computer shops, they now account for nearly two thirds of sales.

Fashion industry crisis after EU import ban
THE FASHION INDUSTRY in Europe is facing its biggest crisis in recent history. Clothing retailers such as H&M, Zara and CD7 A could have empty shops at Christmas because Chinese imports are stuck in European ports. At the moment, millions of Chinese bras, sweaters and T-shirts are sitting in customs warehouses around Europe, following the introduction of import controls in June by the European Trade Commissioner, Peter Mandelson.
A spokeswoman for the retailers said that many small companies are suffering because they cannot sell these Chinese imports. People could lose their jobs and small retailers are facing huge losses, said Anna Price. The EU should release these goods as soon as possible, in time for the Christmas season.
On the other hand, countries such as Italy, Spain and Portugal are in favor of the import restrictions. These countries employ many people in the textile industry. They don’ t want Chinese clothing to flood the market because they can’ t compete with Chinese prices.

Mr. Mandelson is in a difficult position; maintaining the controls could be a disaster for the retailers. But allowing the imports could be equally disastrous for the southern European producers. Meanwhile, the warehouses are filling up with winter season fashions which nobody will want next winter.

A completely different product and a new way of doing business
When James Dyson introduced the DC01 vacuum cleaner in 1993, few people could have guessed that within a few years it would be the biggest selling vacuum cleaner in Britain. With no bag and a number of space age design features, it was unlike any other vacuum cleaner.
Today, the Dyson company employs 1050 people at its headquarters in Malmesbury. The company has an annual turnover of £ 150 million and Dyson vacuum cleaners are sold all around the world. In addition, the company has won many design awards and, moat surprising of all, Dyson cleaners are on display in several of the world's leading museum of modern art.
Dyson is not a typical company. For example. everyone who starts working at Dyson makes a vacuum cleaner on their first day. This way, all the staff know what the company produces and how they produce it.
Designers and engineers work together to design and test their ideas, unlike other companies where they are separate departments. Dyson also believes in direct communication— no one sends memos in the office, they go and speak to each other. And no one wears suits. James Dyson doesn’t insist on this, but he does believe that wearing a suit stops people from thinking creatively.
Judging from the success of Dyson, fewer companies will wear suits in future!

March 29th

China National Chemicals Import and Export Corporation.
We refer to our shipment of Rock Phosphate S. S. "Acropolis" under Contract No. 3XQA7775 OUS.
You make a claim against us for short weight based upon the Qingdao Commodity Inspection Bureau report which shows a total weight on arrival of the shipment of 21 504. 175 metric tons as against the invoice weight on our final invoice No ... dated December 4th, 2011, of 21 504. 175 metric tons in weight between the loaded and the arrival weight.
We would like to point out that the weight of the cargo on loading was taken by the actual physical weighing of product at the time of loading. This can be verified by your agent, the captain of the S. S. "Acropolis”, and was certified in the certificate provided by the shipping superintendent at the port of loading. Furthermore, the scales are constantly checked and verified every week by an independent specialist.
Your weight based on the draft weight was established by the Qingdao Commodity Inspection Bureau and while we certainly respect the work done by your survey team, it is a well - known fact that draft weight calculations do vary between one surveyor and another. The "disappearance” of 35.675 metric tons is on1y 0.165 percent of the total cargo and, therefore, an insignificant difference, an amount which is allowable under any international insurance claim standards.
Notwithstanding, we accept the outturned weight by your inspection bureau and agree to a claim for 35.675 metric tons at the invoice price of 12. 18 US dollars per metric ton or a total amount of 434.52 US dollars.
We would like to point out that we made it quite clear in our exchanges of correspondence, telexes and conversations, regarding the negoastions of the contract, that we would not be responsible for moisture on arrival of the goods at destination and that the only basis for claim would be on the analyses of the samples taken at the time of loading at Vancouver, British Columbia. This moisture content, established by two independent laboratories, Inc. ,showed a moisture content of 1.50 and 1.53 percent respectively and you will see from our invoice that we gave you the average moisture cantent of 1.515 percent. We must therefore disclaim responsibility for the theoretical loss of an additional 49.145 metric tons due to "excessive” moisture.
The cargo was sold to you on FOB Vancouver basis and therefore any claim that you may have for a refund of freight due to loss in weight during the voyage must be made against the owners of the "Acropolis" or the underwriters under your insurance policy. The inspection fee at the port of discharge is the responsibility of the China National Chemicals Import and Export Corporation, as indeed were the survey, weighing and analysis fees, etc. our responsibility on the loading of the cargo at Vancouver. The recovery of such fees can sometimes be made under the insurance policy and we therefore refer you to your own insurance company for recovery of this fee.

Under no circumstances do we feel that this fee should be a charge against the seller.
In the spirit of cooperation for the development of our business, we suggest a settlement of this claim based on the value of the actual tonnage difference between the loading and discharging weights, which we offer to you as compensation without prejudice to our position.
We assure you of pleasant cooperation and take an interest in continuing business with your corporation to our mutual benefit.

Yours truly.

Read the article below about Europe's banks. Choose the correct answer for each question.

Story times for Europe's banks
In spite of all the recent mergers and cost-cutting in the European banking sector, experts are warning that thousands of jobs are still at risk. UK banks could cut up to 20,000 jobs over the next two years as they try to compete with supermarkets and direct providers Switzerland and Germany, with their over-crowded retail banking markets, could see even greater job losses.

The need to reduce non-IT costs is becoming increasingly important as Europe's banks invest heavily in electronic banking and meet the costs of dealing with the millennium bug and European economic and monetary union (Emu) all at the same time. The domestic branch networks will suffer most, with several European banks planning to close up to 15 per cent of their smaller branches.

The staff reductions are made possible by the development of electronic banking services such as telephone banking, smart cards and PC banking. Alan Higgins, Manager of Direct Financial Services at Carlisle NSB, a UK bank, is hoping that home banking technology will put the company ahead of its competitors. "We are testing a product called HomeBank with 2,000 of our customers who have a 24-hour direct modem connection."

The banks have to find a way of cutting staff and using technology without affecting the quality of service. "We have to take the bank to the customer" says Alan Higgins. "I do a lot of my day-to-day banking on a Sunday. "However, in spite of the warnings about jobs, recent figures suggest that banks will continue to make record profits.
